Saying one of the most prolific live service titles “fell short of expectations” in a massive layoff announcement is a slap in the face to every dev and every player who knows how much Destiny meant in an industry where longevity is rare. Whose expectations did it fail? The investors? The execs?

"Game dev is one of those jobs you only do when you really want to. It's not going to make your parents proud, you're unlikely to get rich in an industry that lays off people for making superhits, and its a demanding & confrontative job. Why would you let a machine do the thing you're here to do?"

I spent the last few months talking to over 30 game developers about generative AI. It began as a sort of interview survey but became a pretty comprehensive collection of arguments against the technology altogether. www.gamesradar.com/games/why-so...

The thing to take away about Destiny 2's fate is that shit takes a long time in game dev. The discussions we were having a year or two ago are echoing as fixes in this final patch. The dour community mood from a year ago killed it now. Echoes & shadows of years past affect games more than you think.

A lot of my peers are posting about fond memories and accomplishments, things we contributed to Destiny 2. I worked on the Destiny franchise for about 8 years, starting off as Audio QA on Rise of Iron. Here's a quick thread of my favorite memories:

In 2019, I created #WhatAGameDevLooksLike after I was stopped by security 3(!!) times while picking up my speaker badge. I’m a small Asian woman with pink hair, and I guess I didn’t visually meet their expectations of a speaker. Ironically, I was at GDC to speak about inclusive studio cultures. 🫠

GDC is coming up, which means it’s almost time for #WhatAGameDevLooksLike! Every year this lights up my socials and it’s such a lovely and celebratory time full of belonging and joy. And every year I keep getting reminded of how much we need it as things in the industry get worse lol

For those of you who'll be attending GDC this year; I'm excited to be speaking on a panel about Dialogue Design on Thursday afternoon! Come say hi if you spot me!
