This was one of the best weeks in the site’s history not just in terms of outputs but getting our subs up. That said we are still short of the Home Assistant trigger I have set up that will play “Money, Money, Money” by ABBA on every smart speaker in my house, scaring the living shit out of me.
Our latest sale was such a success we're extending it for another week! Until midnight on August 9 you can get 25% off our 'Member' tier annual sub, OR pay just $1 for your first month! aftermath.site/aftermath-sale...
In my opinion, it’s fun to spend money on quality writing.

That's what taxes are, man. That's the definition of taxes. "You are subsidizing things you might never use" man shut the fuck up. My taxes currently subsidize like oil company exec private jets, you think I'm upset at low-income people eating inexpensive bananas?
Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.
Just so everyone knows, this is a tried-and-true mainstream media tactic. For progressives/leftist candidates, every election is a “crucial test” and any loss would serve as proof to the media that the latest left-side moment is at its end. Any win, though, just means it’s time to find a new test.
Michigan will provide another crucial test of whether progressives can not only keep up their winning streak in safe-blue seats but also break through in battlegrounds crucial for control of Congress. The stakes for the Democratic Party are huge.
these numbers going up are super important because we invest as much money back into the site as we can without starving. more $$$ means more writers, more freelance, more merch, more everything. so your $75 sub in 2026 will get you so much more by 2028, etc etc. it's an investment!
when i say it was a big week: look at these spikes for unique visitors, paid subscribers and monthly revenue (the subs and MRR are scaled and dont start at zero, obv, we didn't double them, but still!)
thank you SO MUCH to everyone who subscribed or just otherwise enjoyed Hater Week, it was one of the biggest weeks in the site's history (in terms of pageviews AND new subscribers) Because of this, we're extending the sale. $75 for a 'Member' sub is an absolute steal.

really cool to see the guardian get in on hater week
This may sound radical but "games are shit" is actually the median opinion of every Gamer.
"[Franchises] are built to hook you and continually reel you in, little by little, until you forget what it was like to ever not have a giant hook in your mouth." Bravo, @nathangrayson.bsky.social

thank you to everyone who read, watched, listened to, and participated in hater week! the response was far beyond anything we expected. we worked insanely hard, and we’re very tired, but also very proud
In an era of hyper-agreeable AI, toxic positivity, and false equivalence, being a hater is more important than ever. @edzitron.com, big AI companies' foremost hater, explains why
The hater's guide to hating aftermath.site/podcasts/after...
My favourite recent games have been Tactical Breach Wizards and Dispatch. They fit nicely in the the 15 hours window. People are bringing up Witcher 3 as a counter, but even better than the main game were the expansions. Tight, focused stories that never overstay their welcome.
back on the hater week debate floor with my most radical and correct stance yet: all video games should be roughly the same length as resident evil 4. this would improve 99.9 percent of them and, more importantly, save the video game industry
If you've got the money, why the fuck not? I'm a day one subscriber and I have no regrets.
hater week isn't over yet, and we're just 20 subscribers away from 5,600. harness your hate for a good cause (worker-owned journalism)

we have officially smashed through the 5,500 mark! look forward to a new you are error episode about misconceptions surrounding the video game crash of 1983 in the coming weeks. now let's get that aftermath zine
We're continuing our Hater Week sub-section called "Nathan is Wrong" and this time he's wrong about franchises . They're fine. "Stories should end" oh like you're going back and playing the first Witcher game.
Franchises are fine, calm down aftermath.site/franchises-are...
disappointing, horrible, ruinous for the industry, but… yeah, nobody with actual power was gonna meaningfully oppose this
NEW: EA says all regulatory approvals required to complete its take-private merger with Saudi Arabia’s wealth fund and other investors have been obtained. Deal expected to close next week on August 4, 2026.
I know people are tired and overworked, but I feel like oftentimes they’re offloading a creative (and, on some level, rewarding) activity to free up time that they’ll ultimately spend scrolling on their phones—thereby further reducing their brains to mush. it’s a vicious cycle of meaninglessness

as it is hater week, I’m just gonna say it: a lot of babies are ugly. there should be more ugly baby representation in games and media
Why do we bash "gamers" for bullying babies but we never question if the child is simply ugly. https://kotaku.com/paralives-babies-are-kinda-ugly-so-the-devs-are-changing-them-2000720479
The Aftermath hater week is really fun and I look forward to future themed outputs from them. I like when my games media sites feel like they have a purpose and vision beyond reviews and regurgitating press releases.

Not every studio that applies is currently on the list (the author said it will be updated frequently as more studios come forward and confirm), but this is a good selection on some studios to support!
