Also “bad” books are fine. Read more bad books! Genre novels, tasteless erotica, random fan fiction. Whatever’s entertaining, read it. I gave up on the idea of reading what’s “good for me” a while back, and I’m happier for it.
When I was younger, I got advice like 'write what you know' and it always felt very limiting. Like I could only write about being a teenager in the midwest. But as an adult fantasy writer, I think about all the special interests I've accumulated and I hear that as a call to always learn more.
