I love being an old wolf who plays flutes, wears a toga and who orates and tells stories. How cool is it to be approaching my mid 60s and living among a community of much younger, fiercer, more attuned to survival critters who accept & encourage this sort of behaviour. 📷 @netsui-prime.bsky.social

The Blind Wolf playing flute (vertical side profile)

Portrait of the Blind Wolf during the opening monologue of Tenebrae. Wearing a black wolf mask with glowing white eyes and a flowing black robe edged in red, the performer addresses the audience beneath the forest canopy. The character is an imposing prophetic figure, a son of Mother Lykaeon, born blind yet able to perceive truths hidden beneath appearances.

Getting ready for Saturday’s second performance of Tenebrae. As a child I was haunted by the image of wolves and kynokephaloi in togas. and here I am in the last quarter of my life actually getting to be one.

A full-length portrait of a wolf-headed figure walking barefoot beneath a forest bridge. The figure wears layered, earth-coloured robes tied with a white cord and carries a wooden flute across the body. Dappled sunlight filters through the trees, illuminating parts of the clothing and the forest floor while the concrete bridge pillars recede into the distance behind.

“My friend bought your book and they lent it to me, I hope thats ok” Yes, absolutely! Yes, yes—all my yes! Books are not to be hoarded but gifts of love and care to be shared. That my book was loaned to another is an expression of their love for you—using my work? Thats an incredible honour.

Someone said to me, "I'm sorry but I got your book from a library." Nobody should ever apologise for that. You read my book! That's brilliant! I grew up hanging out in libraries and the idea of a world without them fills me with dread. Without libraries, authors, like readers, will only suffer.

Went to St. Bread on Portage Bay waterfront earlier in the week. I was entranced by the stained glass window of maybe St. Honoratus of Amiens? Could be St. Nicholas of Tolentino associated with blessed bread distributed to the sick. I didn’t ask. The bread there was good and wholesome.

A tall, pointed stained-glass window set within a white architectural frame. The window depicts a haloed saintly figure with reddish-brown hair, dressed in flowing turquoise and deep blue robes. In one hand, the figure holds a golden palm frond, traditionally a symbol of martyrdom; in the other, they cradle a round scored loaf of bread.

A radiant gold halo fills much of the background, surrounded by vivid blue glass and a narrow green border resembling leaves or vines. At the top of the window is a small turquoise circular emblem containing stylized interlocking letters. The bold black leading, jewel-like colors, and symmetrical composition give the image the appearance of a modern icon rendered in stained glass.

For a while I’ve dreamed of squeezing my heavy studio rig (1st pic) I perform with into an iPad (2nd Pic). I got the first version of it working, (kinda-ish) for Tenebrae at Terror in the Woods. Now I’m refining it; AUM hosts flute processing, Stagetraxx & bass pedals wirelessly connected.

A computer screen showing the Wiring view of Gig Performer, titled “Shimi’s flute setup,” running on a Mac mini M4. The patch is a large modular performance rig combining live flute processing with software synthesis controlled by MIDI bass pedals. On the left, “Audio In (Scarlett 4i4 USB)” branches through multiple chains of processors, including Gain and Balance, MythPre, AU Dynamics Processor, AU Multiband Compressor, AU Peak Limiter, AU Reverb 2, AU Filter, Valhalla Shimmer, and several instances of Valhalla Supermassive. Blue virtual cables carry the processed flute signals into a sixteen-channel Audio Mixer and then to “Audio Out (Scarlett 4i4 USB).”

On the right, a red “MIDI In” block sends MIDI through red cables to several green synthesizer modules, including two instances of Vital and several SynthMaster Player instruments. Their audio outputs pass through additional Valhalla Supermassive effects and a four-channel mixer before joining the main output. An unused eight-channel mixer sits near the lower centre. The densely interconnected patch resembles a digital modular studio, showing the complete flute-effects and bass-pedal synthesis system assembled for live performance. An iPad resting on a quilted bedspread displays the same live-performance concept rebuilt in AUM. Five vertical mixer channels are visible, labelled “Preamp Input 1,” “Preamp Input 2,” “Stagetraxx 3,” “4: Model D,” and “5: Audiokit Synth One.” The first two channels receive USB audio from the flute microphones and contain stacked processing modules represented by circular icons, including high-pass filters, Apple Audio Unit effects, dynamics or limiting, Eventide effects, panning, and individual level controls. Both microphone channels are currently muted.

The StageTraxx 3 channel supplies the performance backing tracks. The Model D and AudioKit Synth One channels provide the synthesizer voices triggered by the bass pedals. An Apple AU Delay editing window is open over the synth channels, showing a frequency graph, a dry/wet mix of 51.4 percent, and a low-pass cutoff of 15,000 hertz. Across the top are transport controls, a tempo of 120 BPM, the USB 1+2 output meter, and a DSP reading of 42 percent. The layout is more compact and touch-oriented than the Mac version, forming a portable iPad recreation of the flute-processing, backing-track, and bass-pedal synthesizer rig.

Final set checks before packing to heading out to premiere Tenebrae. I have been able to boil down my live performance rig to something portable and if the iPad futzes. The iPhone can take over. equipment I no longer need to carry. 🐾

Today’s lectoring I got lost. Recovered carried on. One of the gifts of proclamation is humility. No lector gives a flawless reading every time. What matters is offering the text as faithfully as Old Wolf can … at 9AM. Today’s reading was exactly that. Old Wolf was being faithful. Nothing more.

Romans 8:1-11

There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law-- indeed it cannot, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

Today, reading the start of Paul’s wrapping up of his letter to the Philippians. There is a softness here. That line “shine like stars in the world” is for me the emotional high point of the passage. Also asked to be intercessor, to read the prayers of the people — a lovely responsibility.

Philippians 2:12-18
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians.

"Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without murmuring and arguing, so that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine like stars in the world. It is by your holding fast to the word of life that I can boast on the day of Christ that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. But even if I am being poured out as a libation over the sacrifice and the offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you— and in the same way you also must be glad and rejoice with me.
The Word of the Lord.

Psalm 119:129-136 from the green psalter for the Christian people.

I read from Matthew 21 at Evensong: juicy apocalyptic stuff. Many forget Christianity remained a Jewish messianic cult for decades. Matthew uses charged prophetic language from the Tanakh — Daniel, Isaiah, Ezekiel — and should be read carefully, with understanding & context. (NRSV passage in Alt).

Matthew 24:15-31

So when you see the desolating sacrilege standing in the holy place, as was spoken by the prophet Daniel (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains; someone on the housetop must not go down to take what is in the house; someone in the field must not turn back to get a coat. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath. For at that time there will be great suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. Then if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here is the Messiah!' or "There he is!' do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. Take note, I have told you beforehand.
So, if they say to you, 'Look! He is in the wilderness, do not go out.
If they say, 'Look! He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

Immediately after the suffering of those days

     the sun will be darkened,
     and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from heaven,
and the powers of heaven will be shaken.

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see 'the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven' with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
