Using implementation science and participatory approaches to help community-based organizations address health inequities. Associate Professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Views are my own.
A highlight of my new intro #qualitative research course @hsph.harvard.edu was bringing in two fabulous collaborators - Davine Holness and Bella de Sa. They lost me a bit when they talked about loving coding, but at least we all agreed on the beauty of #participatory, justice-focused research.
Amazon is helping fund a $300 million build of a ballroom for the White House. Independent bookstores are donating to food banks and organizations that help with food insecurity. They are not the same.
Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.
Pure joy! 🤩 That’s how we all felt yesterday as we celebrated the amazing achievements of the @hsph.harvard.edu Class of 2025.
Each year, awards are presented to graduating students, as well as faculty and staff, at Harvard Chan School. Today, we celebrated the many achievements of this year's award winners at a ceremony in the Kresge building. View the full list of awards and winners:

Almost every line of this story would have been simply unbelievable a few months ago: —Pioneering cancer researcher; —*Arrested* at airport in Boston; —Now indefinite ICE detention in Louisiana; —"Crime": not declaring some frog-embryo samples for research. Read it. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

Without scientist Kseniia Petrova’s expertise, no one can fully unlock the data’s potential, putting crucial advancements in early cancer detection at risk.

Congrats to the amazing Dr. (!!!!) Kieran Todd, who defended their @hsph.harvard.edu dissertation yesterday! Beautiful example of place-based, justice-driven, intersectional work. How many folks can share results of Latent Class Analysis and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis at one shot?
Per source, NIH has been instructed to hold off from issuing ALL awards to Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, and Northwestern (including med schools) Agency staff have also been instructed to not speak about this funding freeze to grantees and applicants
Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever they aren’t going into universities’ endowments they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research
There is a PR narrative quickly emerging about “entitlement” of elite universities, as if this $ is some sort of subsidy Harvard & others must counter this quickly The $ doesn’t flow into Harvard’s coffers - this is grant money, most of which goes to research the govt has agreed has social value
“So this is my radical proposal for universities: …Spend your endowments. Accept more, not fewer students. Open up your campuses and expand your reach not by buying real estate but by bringing education to communities. Create a base. Become a movement.”
This piece brought tears to my eyes. It would be transformative of society if most universities took it to heart. Maybe fairly soon, in light of what's happening now, some will. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/o...
