On the night of 2β3 August 1944, nearly 3,000 Roma men, women and children were murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Today, on European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, we honour the victims of the Roma genocide and reaffirm our duty to preserve their memory.

My employer has a software package with the default avatar below π When I inquired about how to change it, the answer was (basically): You can't. But don't worry about it. It doesn't affect anything. It's (perhaps) just a small sign that bias runs deep. #HigherEd

#HigherEd workload is out of control. It is time for a sector-wide teaching formula. Currently, we get the same teaching credit for teaching a course of 20 students as we do for teaching a course of 1800. The workload is not the same, and the distribution of course assignments is not equitable.

Maybe we're seeing the death of the academic publishing model, in real time.
Big lack of qualified reviewers? The cost of generation seems headed to 0 relative to the cost of verification; seems obvious that we must change norms so verification is seen as more of a contribution? What if we require authors to review for some number of conferences before being able to submit?

Question: How many species are there on Earth? Answer: More than we think π§ͺπͺ²π
π§ͺ𧡠πͺ° ππͺ²ππ¦ππ¦πͺ³π¦ How many species of insect are there?Β A seemingly simple question, but one that has been 'bugging' scientists for years.Β Our work out today suggests that there are millions more than we had previously expected.Β doi.org/10.1073/pnas... @gdfcf.bsky.social
π§ͺ𧡠πͺ° ππͺ²ππ¦ππ¦πͺ³π¦ Highly collaborative work is directly rooted in decades of biodiversity inventory in ACG β the Lep inventory begun by Dan Janzen and Winnie Hallwachs, the work of the #parataxonomists, Malaise trapping, DNA barcoding, and global taxonomic collaborations. doi.org/10.1073/pnas...
π§ͺ𧡠πͺ° ππͺ²ππ¦ππ¦πͺ³π¦ Using different kinds of sampling,Β including parasitoids reared from caterpillars and collected using Malaise traps, weΒ extrapolate to a conservative estimate of how many species of insects exist in ACG, and then, by comparing to other taxa, the world.Β doi.org/10.1073/pnas...
