In this rapid assessment, @profejzrobinson.bsky.social & compute that one week of June's heatwave cost more than £1 billion in lost output and 24 million lost working hours. This figure does not include the costs of negative health symptoms reported by 87% of the workers we surveyed.

Grantham Research Institute at LSE@granthamlse.bsky.social · 3mo ago

The heatwave in June 2026 led to 24 million lost hours of working and a £1.15 billion hit to the UK economy, according to new research by @profejzrobinson.bsky.social and @shourodasgupta.bsky.social published today by the GRI and the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change.

Small island developing states are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Lots written on existential threats from sea level rise. In the 2025 @lancetcountdown.bsky.social #SIDS report, we highlight the food security challenge: inc. high import dependency & increasingly disrupted supply chains

1/n In the 2025 @lancetcountdown.bsky.social #SIDS report, Prof @profejzrobinson.bsky.social & I track the impact of increasing frequency of #heatwaves & #droughts on access to food, through impact on crop yields, disrupted supply chains & price stability. #CMCC @granthamlse.bsky.social

1/n During 2020–2023, labour supply (number of working hours) in high-exposure sectors was 1.52% lower (~24 hours/ worker/year) in highly exposed occupations (agri, forestry, mining, quarrying, & construction) due to higher temperatures compared to 1965–1994 baseline. #CMCC @granthamlse.bsky.social

1/n In the 2026 @countdowneurope.bsky.social, @profejzrobinson.bsky.social & I track the impact of higher frequency of #heatwaves & #droughts on access to food. Compared to 1981–2010 baseline, these changes resulted in an estimated additional one million people being food insecure in 2023.

Access to sufficient nutritious food is already made harder by climate change, & will get worse in the future. Agrifood systems account for approx 1/3 GHG emissions, so we need a rapid transition to low carbon diets plus greater efforts to adapt & build resilience. @countdowneurope.bsky.social

"Early warning systems do seem to work. Workers who reported recalling getting a heat alert had a lower probability of reducing their working hours and a lower probability of experiencing heat related health effects." @profejzrobinson.bsky.social @lsepoliticsblog.bsky.social

@shourodasgupta.bsky.social & I wrote an @lseblogs.bsky.social on heat & the UK workforce. Links to our @granthamlse.bsky.social working paper www.lse.ac.uk/granthaminst... We are not used to heatwaves in the UK, insufficient adaptation, insufficient cooling, and worker health is being harmed.

Our "Recently collected evidence suggests that UK workers do feel that their health is being harmed by heat, & many are reducing their working & and effort to help deal with the heat." Read our (w/ @profejzrobinson.bsky.social) @lsepoliticsblog.bsky.social blog on protecting UK workers from heat.

Great to present joint work with @profejzrobinson.bsky.social at the @physoc.bsky.social #GCHS2025. Adaptation including #EWS are partially effective in protecting workers from heat but still insufficient. Clear scope for government interventions: max temperature regulation & better targeted EWS

A climate change induced tragedy. A 47-year-old construction worker died in Emilia-Romagna due to high heat. Construction workers are amongst the most vulnerable to heat stress. We need proactive labour protection policies. Protecting workers from heat is protecting human rights. shorturl.at/uL1ks

Yesterday @gsos-lse.bsky.social and @granthamlse.bsky.social hosted a roundtable on Protecting Worker Health and Income in a Warming World. We are co-creating with roundtable participants some concrete recommendations and next steps to spur action to protect workers. Will share when completed.
