Drought conditions across Western Europe - the effects of our hot, dry, summer so far These two pics were taken by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission ~7 weeks apart. The effects of limited rainfall and hot, clear, weather are clearly visible: Much of Western Europe is looking desert-like from space.

I work at the European Space Agency as the mission scientist for the Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 next generation missions. I mainly post nice pictures of the Earth from space! Note: Not an official ESA account, opinions are my own and mine alone!
Sentinel-2 and wildfires: These last few days, a devastating wildfire has been raging near Los Gallardos in Spain - sadly resulting in multiple deaths and significant destruction. This pic was taken on 10th July by Sentinel-2A, the scale of the fire clearly visible.
England now have their traditional questionable refereeing decision onto which they can put the entire blame for their poor performance 😂
Today in AI is rubbish...it decided I should have "clever" code rather than "valid" code. And we're gonna roll this stuff out to help teach schoolkids, eh?
For those of you interested in our Sentinel-2 night imaging campaign, the data is now ready: freely and openly available! Details: sentinels.copernicus.eu/web/sentinel... Am hoping this data is useful to the EO community, and happy to hear your feedback! @esa.int @esaearth.esa.int @ec.europa.eu
I decided to give Copilot a go, to help with a simple task. Have instantly broken it, and now copilot is sad 😂 Oh well, no AI for me!
Breathtaking! As a child I wanted to travel to the Moon...as an adult, my height worked against me and my travel plans - but I was hooked on space anyway! Delighted to see a joint American + European success on Artemis II! @esa.int supplying the service module. 💪🛰️

Dual use: If we like it or not, all civilian sats have defence-related uses. This video shows the Russian Arctic Metagaz LNG carrier exploding after reportedly being hit by Ukranian drones. It comes from @eumetsat.int's Meteosat-12, a weather satellite. Weather is civil, but we see so much more.
Earlier in Feb, Cyclone Gezani hit Mozambique, sadly resulting in fatalities anddamage to buildings Here, two Sentinel-2 pics show the impacts: Flooding inland, and a hugerunoff heading into the ocean. S2 is critical for disaster response - and we plan to improve its value for the next gen mission!
Fifty two thousand six hundred orbits around our wonderful little planet! Congrats Sentinel-3A! Later this year, younger brother S3C will be launched - ready to take over the operational optical imaging duties so that S3A can enjoy a well-deserved retirement 😀
Today we’re celebrating 52,600 orbits of Earth by the Sentinel‑3A satellite, together with @euspa.bsky.social and @eumetsat.int For ten years, it has been delivering data on oceans, land, ice and atmosphere. The constellation will grow with the launch of Sentinel‑3C in late 2026🚀
Some Beautiful winter views of European Capital cities, thanks to Sentinel-2!
❄️ These capitals are really snowing off 😉 #Tallinn, #Riga and #Vilnius each got a fresh winter coat, perfectly captured by Copernicus Sentinel‑2 from orbit. A reminder that even familiar cities look completely different under a blanket of snow!

In December, we ran a campaign to switch the Sentinel-2A satellite on at night over some specific areas. The goal was to provide data to help me work out how useful night imaging capabilities would be for next gen Sentinel-2...and the results are wonderful! Read more: www.esa.int/Applications...
Kinda shocked at how the Netherlands copes with a little bit of snow. Every train cancelled, roads not clear, people "stocking up on supplies in case shops close". But, tbh, im glad to know its not just the UK that cant handle winter weather. I thought blighty was the exception 😂
The traditional end of year collab between @esa.int , @eumetsat.int, @wmo-global.bsky.social and me. I love making these pics...MTGsending back beautiful data as always! 😍 These four are 06UTC on: 19/12, 22/09, 21/06 and 20/03 Nice seeing how the sunlight moves around our planet during the year.
Huge dust storms in Pakistan, seen by the @esa.int / @ec.europa.eu Sentinel-2B and Sentinel-3B satellites on 4th November. Neither satellite was designed to monitor dust plumes, so it's impressive how much information they give us about the detail and extent of these storms!
Liftoff for Ariane 6 on flight #VA265 carrying the @CopernicusEU Sentinel-1D satellite to space.
Along the N. Coast of Alaska, winter is closing in. These pics ages, from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, were taken just two weeks apart. Heavy snowfall on land, and the beginnings of ice on sea. Soon, the sun will be too low and Sentinel-2 will stop acquiring images until Springtime.
17 hours of #Hurricane #Melissa seen from space compressed into 9 seconds. Weather sats are vital for monitoring and forecasting Hurricanes. Without them, our forecasts would be much worse - increasing the danger posed by these monsterous storms. Data: NOAA / GOES-19 Video: ESA / Simon Proud
It was great to be at @thalesaleniaspace.bsky.social last week to discuss the SIRIUS mission that is under consolidation as one of @esa.int's future SCOUT missions. SIRIUS will examine land surface temperature, with a focus on urban heat islands and unique data for evapotranspiration models.
Here are two images from the @esa.int / @ec.europa.eu Sentinel-2 mission showing the city of #Salalah in Southern Oman. One pic from June, before the rainy season, and one from this week, after the rains. The hills around the city transform into a lush green landscape!
Delighted to see that the next Meteosat satellite will launch on a European rocket. MTG-I2 will complete the imaging constellation for Europe's next generation weather satellites, providing vital warnings for severe weather, wildfires, and more.
Following an extraordinary meeting of the EUMETSAT Council on 2 Sept, we can announce that MTG-I2 will launch on an Ariane 62 rocket, scheduled for 2026 🚀 MTG-I2 will help Europe’s NMHS further improve nowcasts of severe weather, vital for early warnings. More on the decision here: bit.ly/3JDaC7H
Am taking some time for relaxation in the Alps, so apologies for being slow to respond to messages and comments. Will be back in the world of space-based Earth Observation soon, but for now im enjoying EO at slightly lower altitudes 🙂
Congrats to my friends + colleagues across @esa.int , @eumetsat.int and @ec.europa.eu. MetOp-SG is exciting, a big leap forward for weather prediction. I think the key thing will be watching how scientists combine data from the different instruments to understand our planet. Lots of potential 😀
