Keiichi Sato didn’t join the production of Giant Robo (1992-98) until episode three, but you can clearly tell he took inspiration from Makoto Kobayashi’s designs when he made the The Big O (1999-2003). They both adopt a distinctly retro style that invokes mid-twentieth century kitsch and nostalgia.
