I can confirm that using claude to write rust works pretty well. RustMallet is a whisker faster than Java Mallet at training topic models, and adds some tweaks that I have avoided in Mallet for stability reasons (multiple saved states by default). github.com/mimno/RustMa...

Just found out that a course in DH is now required on my campus for all students doing teacher education.

The beta release of the Lexos text analysis library is now available at github.com/scottkleinma.... It reproduces and extends the Lexos web app as a Python library in a way that is approachable for students and Humanities researchers, and useful for developers producing their own apps.

Kicking off my #DayofDH chatting with wonderful Cal State folks about how to sustain and grow our system-wide Digital Humanities consortium (@dhatcsu.bsky.social). We're exploring ways we can pool our collective expertise and energy to support each other

My #DayOfDH2024 is mostly devoted to dealing with teaching and advising tasks put on hold for the Thanksgiving holiday. But I'm going to try to squeeze in some work on Lexos, including tasks suggested by my code reviewers at DHTech (dh-tech.github.io).

The California Faculty Association, repping faculty, librarians & coaches across the 23 campuses of the California State University (CSU), is preparing for an unprecedented, systemwide strike Jan 22-26 w Teamsters Local 2010. The CSU is the largest public 4yr uni system in the US. This will be huge✊

The Cal State system is set to go on strike. As far as I can tell, system admins have made no effort to lobby the State for more funding. I've already assumed that the first week of classes will be cancelled. Now I have to guess how many more weeks to remove from my syllabus.

The California Faculty Association is calling for a strike Jan 22-26 across the California State University, the largest public university system in the US. It is sad, but salaries have now fallen so far below inflation that faculty cannot carry on as usual.
