Publication alert!🥳 We examine the roles of miscarriages, induced abortions, and ART. For part of the period, we were also able to distinguish between induced abortions performed at the woman’s request and those performed for medical reasons—two pathways with markedly different consequences.

Actually, social composition effects mean that, in ~50% polygynous countries, the places with the most polygyny have the least unmarried men! Another ~40% have no association, even after controlling for the local sex ratio. Communities that marry polygynously, usually marry more overall (3/5)

The sub-national associations between the prevalence of polygyny (the proportion of married men over age 20 in a polygynous marriage) and the prevalence of unmarried men (the proportion of men in their 20s who have never been married) in 74 censuses, mostly from Sub-Saharan Africa.The proportion of men in their 20s who were never-married across United States counties in 1880, disaggregated by marriage system and region. Out of five groups, the second lowest proportion of unmarried men is found in the polygynous West (which was mostly Utah)
