Book 2.85: Confidence Boost - September 15th, 2025 #readslumbertown #labyrinth #webcomics

Romy averts their eyes despairingly. "That's... easy for you guys. But I'm bad at lying. And I'm not confident at all..." Boone urges Romy gently, while motioning to his tummy for emphasis. "It's not lying, kid. It's followin' your gut. And stickin' to it!" He gestures with his head back to the stone slab with the riddle on it. "Take this riddle. Fire, rivers... don't see anything like that down here. Is there anything else in this cave you CAN see?" Romy turns her head back to the wall. "Well, there's..." She looks up at the constellations etched on the rocks, while Boone smiles from afar. "Stars." Echo holds a cup of coffee, standing against a flashback from Book 1 of Romy and herself standing underneath the starry night sky, Romy explaining something excitedly to Echo while Boone watches from his apartment deck with his pajamas on. This is in reference to the Book 1 scene where Romy enthusiastically imparts their love for astronomy on Echo. Echo: "Rather convenient for YOU, I'd say. Wasn't that a big interest of yours back home. Charting stars?"

Book 1.85: Pupper for Supper - September 14th, 2020 #readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics

Romy observes Echo from across the table, with a spaghetti noodle still lopped over their head. 'Echo seems so... unbothered.' They recall the string of events that just happened to themselves and Boone while inside the paintings. 'It makes sense that none of it was real. But it still FELT real.' Echo stirs her plate of spaghetti nonchalantly. 'How does she manages to always be so confident? And fearless?' A voice cuts into Romy's thoughts. "Can I start you off with something to drink?" Romy looks up in the direction of the voice. "Oh, uh. Sure. I..." The ghost hand with a hat and bowtie is seen from behind them. Romy turns around, confused, as one ghost hand puts a menu in their paws, another clearing the noodle off their head. "Be sure to check out our appetizers too." Romy looks down at the menu, which lists various food items such as: Dog tongue stew, thighsticks, pickled liver, kneechips and queso, fried dog ears, toe bean burrito, knuckle sandwich, tail brisket. "We've got a couple of house specials you'll be DYING to sink your teeth into!" Romy shivers as they read the items on the menu. The hand looms ominously behind them. "It's okay. Take your time."

Romy facepalms. "... I'm so confused." Echo consoles her. "Yeah - sorry. Boone's words can have that effect on people." Boone leans in with his ear perked. "Hold up. ME? MY words? You're the one who's always turning my words around. And making my sense make less sense!" Echo and Boone stand behind a spacey, starry background with their backs toward each other. Echo is palming herself on the forehead while Boone grumpily crosses his arms. The Scorpio constellation is seen behind Echo, the Aries constellation behind Boone. Echo: "Alright, whatever. Boone and I tend to disagree about the way things work here. But we do have one thing in common..." Echo gives a toothy grin, her glasses glistening. "CONFIDENCE." Echo is seen sitting on the cave floor with a half-lidded smile, as Boone leans his cheek against hers from over his shoulder, going "HMPH." Echo: "You gotta make sense of things your own way. Even if it doesn't make sense to anyone else." Romy nervously twiddles her fingers. "Y-you mean I'm supposed to... make things up?" Boone: "... when you put it that way..." They both look at Romy with a grin. Echo: "Yeah. Pretty much."

Boone perks up at the sound of Echo's voice. "Wuh... ?" He leaps up with teary-eyed joy. "ECHO! You're alive!" Echo sarcastically glances at the back of her hand. "What? Oh, would you look at that. A corporeal form." Boone stutters and smooshes around his face dramatically. "B-buh - but! Demon monster! Killer seaweed! Sudden onset of arthritis and our own inevitable doom!" Echo smirks while holding her glass of wine. "Calm down and order a drink." She takes a sip, while Boone looks back at her with a pout. Appalled, he tries to level with her. "But - you were - we - the PAINTINGS... didn't you SEE any of that?!" Echo, somewhat tired of his antics: "Boone. It's not real." She swirls around a fork in her plate of spaghetti and... eyeballs? "Someone here is clearly trying to scare us. They must've found the peal - or stolen it - and now they're using the cover of its illusions to hijack an emotional response from you. Specifically, your fear." She lifts the fork to her mouth, with an eyeball impaled between the noodles. "Try to remain calm. And don't let it get to your head too much." Boone tries to retaliate with another "but... !", then huffs a little impatiently.

Book 2.83: Wonderous Whimsical Dreamland - September 1st, 2025 #readslumbertown #labyrinth #webcomics

Lester interjects, while Boone flips quickly through his Iowa Joan comic book. Les: "Riddles?! Well ain't that a buncha baloney!" Boone, hunched into his comic book: "I mean, it tracks. Most dungeons have puzzles before you reach the final boss. In 'Issue 19'..." Lester: "Oh, can it. Your comics are baloney too." Boone jabs at Lester's chest, offended, "YOU TAKE THAT BACK!". Romy looks up at the hole in the ceiling from where they fell, and up at the sun. "But a riddle? Here? Where we just broke through the ceiling?" She rubs her arm uncertainly, while the shadow of Janus's silhouette looms ominously behind her. "How do we know someone's actually been down here before?" Boone clasps Romy's shoulder and waves his arm in the air, while a cloudy dreamy backdrop with rainbows and bubbles surround them. "Romy. Buddy. We are in the bowels of wonderous whimsical dreamland!" Echo slides in from the side of the page. "... presumably." Boone's eyes light up excitedly. "RIGHT! Nothing here ever makes sense!" Echo, coolly: "No? It's means ANYTHING makes sense." Boone: "That's what I mean! NON-sense!"

Romy and Boone are still falling. Boone is still screaming. Echo looks up at them from below, seemingly unphased by their arrival from out of the void. Both Romy and Boone crash onto a dining table, where Echo is sitting and enjoying a casual meal of spaghetti and wine. Romy falls right on top of the table, with her head on Echo's plate, where she looks up and blushes at Echo from embarrassment. Boone lands even less gracefully, somehow upside-down with his butt on the table and the rest of him splayed out toward the ground. Echo just says, "Ah. I was starting to wonder when you two might drop in."

Book 2.82: Una y Tres - August 25th, 2025 #readslumbertown #labyrinth #webcomics

Romy and Echo walk toward a stone slab atop a few stone stairs. The shrine is shaped like a sun with two horns (like the Aries symbol) sticking up from the top. The slab says "Una flama, tres rioz". A flame symbol is inscribed with three river symbols surrounding it. Romy: "It's some kinda message. But just in symbols. And Spanish, maybe?" Echo steps in front of the slab and counts with her fingers. "Una. Tres. I don't know a ton of Spanish, but I think it's just coinciding with the symbols. One flame. Three... rivers?" She looks at Romy in a disoriented daze, while Romy looks back at her in concern. Echo: "Heh. Not bad. I'd say that's fairly simple, as far as cave riddles go."

Book 1.82: Still Falling - August 31st, 2020 #readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics

The old Romy opens her mouth in shock, and a pair of doggy dentures falls out of her mouth and into their paws. Old Boone shakily holds an ear trumpet up to his earhole. "... EY! Who's makin' all that racket?! Oh. That's jus' me. Beheheh..." The vision depletes into a shared thought cloud between Romy and Boone, in current form (and age), holding each other and screaming as they plummet through a nightmare void laden with clock gears. Boone pulls out a mirror, and both he and Romy share a moment of relief that it was all just a bad dream. Boone, while looking back at a mirrored reflection of himself (winking back like the handsome devil he is) cries, "Hey, L-look! I'm 33 again. We're not old anymore!" Boone and Romy cling tighter to each other. "BUT WE'RE STILL FALLLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!"

Boone taps his chin and peers up innocently. "Baa? Guess we found a way in." He gets up to stretch and crack his bones, giggling, while Lester fumes silently behind him. "And the fall wasn't as bad as I expected either! Hehe!" Romy rubs their face in winced pain. "Oooongh..." 'What is this place?' A large establishing shot displays a wide cavern with saturated blue and orange lighting, constellations etched on the walls, and stalagmites hanging from the ceiling and floor. Boone is still stretching, Lester is hunched over picking up his beer bottle, and Romy and Echo are standing and observing the opposite wall. Romy: "It... looks like another dead end." Echo: "Unlikely. There's ALWAYS a path forward in Slumber." Echo gestures over confidently to a less confident Romy. "Take a closer look. See anything that sticks out to you?" The camera pans to Romy's other side, where they catch sight of a stone tablet with giant ram horns like the Aries symbol. Romy: "Hum."

Book 1.81: Persistence of Time - August 24th, 2020 #readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics

Romy touches the tips of their index fingers together timidly, and the camera zooms out on them while the ticking noises increase in volume and frequency. 'So it's not just my imagination. Boone can feel it too.' They look down at their paws, their fingers starting to tremble and shake. 'Time... time is moving so fast here...' Their hands continue to shake, fur shedding dramatically from their hide. 'And... I'm...' Years worth of calendar pages fly off the wall and through the air, whizzing past Romy with frightening speed. Time is literally flying, very quickly, Romy's shedding fur getting pulled along with the wind. A clock spins and ticks ever faster behind Romy as they start observing their body and clothes - ears getting droopier, hoodie starting to wither, tear and sag. 'What's... happening to me... ? My BODY...' A calendar page smacks Romy in the face, and when it drops off, she suddenly looks very, very old, with furrowed eyebrows, cracked wrinkled eyes, a white muzzle and paler fur. There's a slightly disturbing transformation sequence depicting Romy's silhouette craning and then hunching lower, fur shedding like crazy, ears growing longer and thinner like a droopy old dog. '... I'm... turning........... old?' When the transformation is complete, she is basically just elderly now, and her bones tremble, as she appears to struggle standing upright. Boone's voice suddenly cuts in, and Romy's eyes crack open from her wrinkled face. "Ey, Romy... did'ya hear what the old truck said when he went in for repairs... ?" She turns her head, witnessing Boone, who has undergone a similar transformation, hunched over with a cane, saggy clothes and ears, and a beard that's probably miles long. "He asked to re-TIRE! Baaaahehehhehh - HORF!"

Book 2.80: Splat! - August 11th, 2025 #readslumbertown #labyrinth #webcomics

A loud crash sounds as the ground beneath the trio collapses, sending them right down through an expanding hole in the ground. Romy gives out a scared and instinctual "ARF!". An establishing shot displays all three of them falling down the hole above Lester (Boone screaming NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO!), who is slowly starting to recover his bearings and stand back up. Before he can do so, however, Romy lands on top of him with a SPLAT!. Echo then lands on top of both of them with a SQUASH!. Boone slams down on top of the pile with a huge SPLOOOOOT!, knocking the wind out of Lester from the very bottom.

Romy observes their surroundings nervously, while a distracted Boone tries to slap water out of his ear. "Uhhh..." They scratch their chin as they gaze down at the weird mound that resembles their face. "I'm not sure we're out of the woods just yet..." Their ear perks up as they hear a distant and ominous ticking from somewhere. 'Huh.' They look over at a slumped clock - arrows spinning rapidly with an ever-increasing ticking. Romy becomes transfixed for a moment, the arrows cartoonishly reflected and spinning in their own eyeballs. Boone's voice calls from afar. "... Romy?" Romy turns their head toward him, the pupils of their eyes still replaced with the clock arrows. "Whuuuuuh?" Boone also begins scratching his chin in apprehensive thought. "Correct me if I'm wrong. But I don't think clocks are supposed to move that fast?" He pulls up a calendar from 2016, the current year, where the months and days have scratched off repeatedly with question marks. "I mean... time doesn't exist in Slumber. But I'm pretty sure that's not normal. Even by normal standards."

The scene shifts to a birds-eye perspective above the hole where Romy, Boone and Echo are seen gazing down at Lester below. Lester angrily retorts, "Bloody carrion! What'z it look like?!" Romy winces and thinks to themselves, 'He's alive, I guess... we should probably pull him up.' They turn to Boone and ask, "D-didn't you pack a rope?" Boone starts pulling his backpack off his shoulder: "Right! Yeah! Lemme just -" Echo holds up her hands nervously and instructs, "W A I T. Stop. Moving." The ground is shown cracking underneath their feet. Boone panics and tries to run away on instinct. "HAYSTACKS!!! We gotta dip!" Echo grabs a fistful of his jacket to stop him. "No, Boone. STAY. I explicitly said -"

Book 1.79: Clocking In - August 10th, 2020 #readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics

Romy slowly drifts off as they drown, peacefully(?) amidst the waves. But the wave plops them down onto dry land... and a different painting... with a SPLAT!, waking them back up to the reality of the nightmare they're in. Boone gasps loudly and dramatically, as Romy's eyes crack open weakly. "UGHN... air never tasted so good." He starts rambling angrily. "Those paintings downright ASSAULTED us! If you ask me... I'd say someone was tryin' to scare us on PURPOSE!" The scene zooms out to show the two of them lying still on the ground, opposite of one another, in the famous painting The Persistence of Memory, where folded clocks litter the area along with a distorted face of Romy. Boone, obliviously: "Whew. 'Least it's finally over now. I could use some time to think!"

They approach the hole Lester fell through, which leads down into a huge rocky cliff with blue and orange lighting, constellations on the walls, and poppy flowers littered on the ground. As Lester lays in a painful position on the ground, Echo calls down, "Uhh. Lester? You good?"

Romy and Boone are awkwardly chilling (drowning) in the seaweed bed. Boone grabs a sharpie, pops off the top, and begins frantically scribbling something on his arm. He shows his arm to Romy. It says "WE'RE DROWNING!" Romy just gives him an undiscernible look. He starts scribbling something else. The new message on his arm reads, "AAAAAAHHH!" Boone also screams for real, and then begins choking because he forgot he was underwater, rendering the point of the arm message kinda redundant.

Book 2.77: Dead End - July 21st, 2025 #readslumbertown #labyrinth #webcomics

Romy is trying to cover her blushing face with her paws, still walking ahead. 'Focused... stay focused!' Her paws push forward. 'The stars... the path..." A voice off screen catches her attention. "Oh, hey Rom-ster." Boone is seen in front of Romy, leaning down and offering her a bottle of water. "Your face is pretty red. Are you staying hydrated?" Romy, still blushing madly: "NO - I mean YES! I mean -" She pulls the bottle to her face, still blushing, albeit timidly. "Did we hit a dead end?" The four adventurers are seen silhouetted from atop a flat peak, with no path in sight. Boone: "Maaaaaaybe. Haven't seen a single entrance so far." He continues speaking to Romy and Echo, while Lester nonchalantly lumbers off behind him. Boone lifts his foot and points to it: "It's weird. These rock formations feel a bit hollow underhoof. So there must be a cave somewhere around here." He pauses with a finger to his chin, in deeper thought. Lester stands off in the distance, the ground cracking underneath his feet. Boone, unaware: "We just gotta find a way to get in -" Lester falls through the ground with a loud "GAHUHU?!", and Boone's ear lifts, pupils moving toward the direction of the sound. "... side."

Book 2.76: Mounting Up - July 14th, 2025 #readslumbertown #labyrinth #webcomics

Echo puts a hand on Romy's shoulder playfully, and Romy glances back with a bit more of a shy and humbled look. Echo: "Well, someone's enthusiastic. Alright, silly pooch. Why don't you lead?" There's a large establishing shot of Romy and Echo ascending a path up a giant mountain hill, following the constellations on the rocks from the bottom of the page. Lester can be seen somewhere halfway up the mountain, lying down and splayed over a rock while guzzling alcohol. Boone can be seen at the very top, perched atop a cloud above the mountain's peak, and searching around with a concentrated look. Romy and Echo converse back and forth as they make their way up. Romy, shyly: "Y-you think I'm silly?" Echo, grinning: "Uh huh. In a cute way." Romy blushes, shocked and embarrassed, "CUTE?!" Echo, unbothered: "It's a compliment. Try not to get sidetracked." Romy, still blushing, and clearly struggling to hold it together, "Don't worry, I'm not! HAH!!!" Echo, teasingly: "Really? Because your face is so red, it's a bit hard to tell."

Boone and Romy suddenly realize they are floating in mid-air. Boone: "Before... uh." They both fall downward into a painting recognizable as The Great Wave off Kanagawa, descending into the water with a SPLASH! Boone coughs. "Ugh... I think I got salt water up my nose. You okay, Romy?" Romy, looking dead from the impact: "Huh? Oh. I... think so... how -" Boone screams out in yet another panic. "BAAAA! S-something's got me!" Romy: "Wh -" "ROMY! Romy, help -ubbluuuuhl!" Boone gets pulled underwater, leaving air bubbles on the surface. Romy freaks out. "Boone... ? BOONE!" 'What do I do?! He's not resurfacing...' Seaweed grips at her arms and legs, threatening to drag her down to the same watery demise. 'Uh... ?! Oh." Her eyes pop open with the realization of what is about to happen. 'That can't possibly be good.'

Echo and Romy's shadows gaze down upon a rock face, where glowing stars and constellations are etched upon the surface. Romy gasps excitedly, eyes forming into stars: "*gasp* STARS!!!" She tilts her head inquisitively. "Linked together like constellations... but not constellations I recognize." Echo, casually: "They're more like a path, I've noticed." She then puts her hand to her aching head, still struggling with her concussion, "We could try to follow the stars. See where they lead or... something or other..." Romy reacts in an epiphany of sorts, her hat comically bouncing off her head in shock and awe. "FOLLOW THE STARS. Like the voice said. I get it now!!!" Echo squints, confused. "Whuh..." Romy sweats nervously and grins widely. "N-nothing. Sorry!" She clenches her fists in excitement, turning to Echo with starry-eyed vigor. "I just - I have a REALLY good feeling you're right, Echo! Let's follow them!!"

Book 1.75: Chaos and Corridors - July 20th, 2020 #readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics

Boone quickly swivels his head around, first looking scared, then hopeful as he locks in on an escape route. He points toward the fence, where there's a purple painting leaned up against it with an exit sign. "THERE! A way out!" The scene transitions outside the painting as Boone and Romy escape its frames. As Boone exits The Scream painting, he chucks breathmints at the pursuing demon-thing. "Hasta la breathmint, STINKY!" Romy realizes there's no stable footing outside of the painting they just exited, and swings their arm from one of the hotel lamps near the Out of Service elevator. 'W-whoa! Uh...' Boone: "T-this way, Romy! HURRY!" Boone pulls himself up onto a floating hotel door, where Romy is already seen crouched and shivering with fear. He pants. "Ughhn... NO FAIR. How is that thing still following us?!" They pass by a few other paintings on the wall, Romy following Boone blindly into the unknown. Both of them are looking around, but not forward - not watching where they're running as Boone unknowingly starts venturing into the frames of another painting. Romy has their arms clutched over their chest. "Boone... I don't understand! Where -" Boone: "No time to explain! We need to keep moving! And FAST! Before..."

Romy and Echo are both blushing, as Romy adverts her eyes away awkwardly. Romy: "..... okay." She looks at Echo's blushing face, trying to interpret the situation in her head. 'Okay?! Is she okay?' Visuals depict Romy posing within bubbles, shrugging and slouching dejectedly in her confusion and anxiety - Romy herself, meanwhile, twiddles her thumbs while deep in thought. 'It kindaaaaa feels like she's not? But why wouldn't she say so? I don't wanna seem like I'm awkwardly prying... and I'm probably making her feel awkward just asking!' Romy walks silently down the trail, eyes closed, focused on a wafting scent while treading between assorted rocks and plants, and passing by a pole with astrological signs plastered around it. They open their eyes. 'Uhhhh.' Romy looks back and forth between three separate trails, all pointing in different directions, while the scent wafts around all three of them. 'The Alex scent is... branching off EVERYWHERE. There's no clear path to follow...' They glance at their phone. 'No new texts from that weird phone number either.' Echo then appears behind Romy, who slips their phone back into their pocket. "Oh! Echo. I, uh - I guess we're just looking around." She takes Echo's hand in her paw. "Are you... doing okay?" Echo, averting her eyes and squinting against the sun: "Nyeh. Been better." Romy, sadly: "Oh." Echo then quickly changes her mood, not wanting to sound like a downer. "B-but it's fine! I've been worse too. MUCH WORSE! Ahahaha!" She clings to Romy's shoulders and stares her in the face, trying to look reassuring, but failing. Romy: "Um. Are you sure?"
