How crazy is this!? A plant mimicking the smell of ants injured by spiders to fool kleptoparastic flies into performing pollination 🤯 Plant shenanigans is an endless source of wonderful biology! www.cell.com/current-biol...
Olfactory floral mimicry of injured ants mediates the attraction of kleptoparasitic fly pollinators
Mochizuki reports a plant that lures pollinating flies by imitating the scent of ants injured by predators. This study reveals the first known case of ant mimicry in flowers and uncovers previously un...

That was rather a long day! A full day's teaching and then in the evening an online login for the launch in Tahiti of our new book on the history of Partula shell cultural artefacts. It's been a very interesting project delving into a different aspect of these endangered species. 🌏🐌
Kon et al. performed WGS on 181 individuals of 86 ornamental Japanese medaka strains, tracing their origin to the Kansai–Setouchi region, and uncovered 3,328 genes associated with 26 phenotypes. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msag021 #evobio #molbio #medaka
New genome assembly of a land snail🐌🎉
Krishnan et al. present annotated nuclear and mitochondrial genome assemblies of Indrella ampulla, a color polymorphic land snail endemic to the Western Ghats of India. The assembly has N50 of 632 kb, and 93.5% BUSCO completeness. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/gbe/evaf199 #genome #evolution #snail
Incredible color variation and density in grove snails (Cepaea nemoralis)!
Problems and progress in getting molluscan 🐌 genome assemblies, new paper out. Although the publication was much delayed, we recently redid the analysis, finding that actually not much ahs improved 😔 academic.oup.com/mollus/artic... 🧬 & 🖥️ #genomics #snails #molluscs
Molluscan genome assemblies—problems and progress
A reference genome assembly is a starting point for research (Davison & Neiman, 2021) in a wide variety of subdisciplines of biology, including mollusc

I had a wonderful meeting on molluscs. While it was the first talk in English for me, the meeting was pretty relaxed and comfortable. Cheers!
@snail-ecol-evol.bsky.social et al. assemble the first chromosome-level genome of a Helicoidea snail. Combining short and long read data, they obtained a 2.18 Gbp assembly of Bradybaena similaris, a model for shell shape evolution and invasion biology. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/gbe/... #genome #gastropoda
