"You won't tell me," I said after a long period of silence. "Perceptive." "Why come to Silverreach the way you did, why hike all the way out here when you're clearly not prepared—" "I was prepared." "What, is it demon business?" He looked up. "Would you believe it if I said so?" I almost laughed. "I'm not going to help you lie to me." The corner of his mouth lifted. A fraction of a smile, and my heart skipped a beat. Weird.$

#Wipsnips! Childhood memory from Sanctuary (I'm almost done editing this thing I swear) #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

In her knee-length yellow dress, her apron covered in splotches of dirt and water, my mother stood over a table covered with fresh flowers. Her dark hair fell in loose curls out of her bun, but she was too focused to fix them. With a hand wrapped around her chin, she stared at the array of flowers, solving some critical design problem in her head. In the smear of colors before her, at least one did not belong, and she would find the culprit. Or one was missing, and she would find its home.
Beside me, my father leaned over the table with childlike amusement. He picked up a tulip and twirled it, beginning to peel back the layers and look inside when a smack he hadn't seen coming hit his wrist and the tulip was plucked from his fingers.
“Don't ruin my flowers.” My mother said, a playful lilt in her voice. “If you like them that much, you can water the ones in the garden.” She quickly added, “Please be gentle this time.”
The glint in his eye said he remembered last time too and would stop just short of whatever he thought would get him in trouble—as if my mother would ever really be angry with him.
My father pushed off the table and tossed me a conspiratorial grin. “Would you like to see what I’ve been practicing?”

I love designing buildings/towns in different regions. Details write themselves and over time the world develops naturally. My favorite moments are when I see the architecture reflecting the culture and tying into the story themes - it satisfies my nerdy heart 🤓 #crpnessie #camprevpit

“Well, don’t be.” I patted his cheek and he looked at me with murder in his eyes; my smile broadened. “I have killed plenty of faeries; I know what I’m doing.”

“What’s this?”
“Made us some tea.”
I raised a brow. “Where—how?”
“Found a kitchen. Needed a bit of dusting, but it still works. There’s no food of course, but we can hunt and forage in the woods and cook here. Oh! And I think there may be a way we can manage hot baths. There isn’t running water, but we have ways of heating it and with how heavily it was snowing this morning…”
He spoke so excitedly, like a child telling someone about their newest discovery.
Setting the book aside, I reached out to take the tea. The side of the mug burned enough to scare the palms of my hands away. A gentle mix of herbs greeted my nose on tufts of steam.
I listened to the eagerness in Stabby’s voice, the catches in his breath when he remembered another detail he’d forgotten to tell me. We’d only been apart for an hour or so, and he talked like he had a year’s worth of news.

“We should be smart about this,” he said. I tried not to let my mind linger on the gentleness in his low voice or the way his thumb swept across my cheek.
Warmth bled into my side from his other hand as it pressed into the waist of my thick winter coat, and I found myself melting against the stone archway, struggling to stay focused.
My hunt—that’s what mattered. But maybe I could do both. Maybe I could let Stabby frolic in his old fort, let him sketch things and explore for a while if it made him happy. It was more time stolen from my hunt, but if he was right that there was something here that could help…
“We’ll kill it. I promise,” he said, as if he could read my thoughts. “And when I’m finished here, I’ll be your bait, as long as you want me.”
My heart skipped a beat, but I looked up just in time to see his subtle smile falter, to hear his breath catch. Didn’t sound like the even inhale of an honest man. The look in his eyes seemed genuine, not that I could ever know for sure. “As long as I want you?”
“Yes.” The word came out in a breath. He knew what I’d do to him if he lied.
“Fine.” Both hands on his sides, I pushed him away, and with one last sweep of our surroundings, I picked up my pack and let Stabby determine our next steps.

I was covered in shimmering green faerie blood when I stormed through the ornate palace gates. My every step squished, leaving washed-out prints on the gleaming marble floor.
People stared as I passed but no one tried to stop me. Maybe it was because I was armed. Maybe it was the shock of my being there at all. Or maybe it was the severed, webbed claw in my hand that dripped a stronger green beside my bloody boot prints.
I had just turned eighteen and this was my first time visiting my father.

Little moment of reflection from my mc in the early pages of Sanctuary❄️ #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #Fantasy

Hours later, my house was a mess, my bookshelf emptied, and I’d found absolutely nothing on giant snakes. Nothing on demons, either, not that I’d been looking. I had, however, become sidetracked reading my old faerie tales meant for children.
For my sixth birthday, I'd gotten a book of faerie pranks, though most of them required magic to carry out. On the inside of the cover in my father's ornate script was a dedication:
“To my partner in mischief: I strive to be your worst influence, and I am eager for the day you surpass me.
P.S: Hide this one from your mother.”
