I very much wish I'd been single in the pre-algo Twitter years rather than now. "hey, anyone want to come and watch a film at mine?" would've assembled a party in about 10 minutes in 2009. Putting that on my IG stories, or even on FB, would feel very weird indeed...

Morning all. Recorded this for #OzzyDay a coupla weeks ago, but just put it on YT - solo cover of NIB by Black Sabbath. Does not sound much like Sabbath, though Bill Ward was undoubtedly a jazz drummer 😉 youtu.be/DjJNFRoGFRU?...

20 min documentary about Sugar - Copper Blue is an extraordinary record and makes a strong case for Bob Mould being one of the most influential rock artists of the last 40 years, following on from Hüsker Dü. There's so much that's interesting in here... youtu.be/Vl_vt9HTW4I?...

Thoughts on Being Prolific – Lessons From John Coltrane.
(This is the first time in many, many years that I've reproduced a 'tweet-thread' on the blog. Only this time, it's from Bluesky, not that other hellscape. For those of you who are new-ish round here,...

This is a really important epistemological point. The fixedness of music has a long and problematic history.
I've been reading about the development of Western music at the beginning of written notation. The idea of fixing music in place has long caused as many problems as it solved.
just found this amazing chronological list of everything Coltrane ever recorded: rateyourmusic.com/list/wizardj... Coupla things worth noting: VERY few albums took more than a day. A lot of tracks were the first and only take. (cont)

just found this lil' think I wrote on Facebook back when it had a quasi-blog function built in, titled 'The Illusion of Genre' - it's nice to know that 36-year-old, 2009 me was having thoughts I'd still largely agree with now :) www.stevelawson.net/2026/08/the-...
The Illusion Of Genre – a post from 2009
The following thoughts were posted to Facebook, back when there was a quasi-blogging function built in. I'm not going to edit them, as it's more interesting to me to log where my thinking about things...

Getting a late night tube across London and switching my usual 90s RnB playlist for Bartok's String Quartets. The difference in everything is startling. I think it even smells different 😳
This is all amazing music. @andrewhowie.bsky.social has been consistently making fascinating beautiful records for decades 🙏
Hi folks. It's Bandcamp Friday, so it's the perfect day to pick up one (all?) of the four albums I've released this year. Details and links are in the alt text. Or find them (and everything else I've done) here: autoclaverecords.bandcamp.com
Buying music on Bandcamp = supporting artists. Today is Bandcamp Friday! For 24 hours, we waive our revenue share, so even more of every purchase goes to the artists and labels behind the music. Go forth. The music is waiting. https://bit.ly/4pX3JPz
Also I think Pete just saluted my indefatigability... Which suggests I'm about to be invaded on the pretext of imaginary WMDs... 🫣😬
The newest from improvising phenomenon @solobasssteve.bsky.social, who releases records at a rate most of us make hot dinners. Steve is indefatigable and such an important part of the world of self-facilitation in music. music.stevelawson.net/album/40-yea...

I've been using loop pedals for 30 years and helping to design their features for 22 years. The Looperlative Loop Pad is hands down the best Looper I've ever used. Truly truly brilliant. 🙌
The Loop Pad by @looperlative is not your average looper AND it will be available starting TODAY, June 27th! What are some of the things this looper does that you can't get in other currently available loopers? ♾️ Eight fully independent stereo tracks. ♾️ One button press that triggers up

Manifesto is out publicly tomorrow, already out for subscribers. How We Got From There To Here is out for subscribers tomorrow, & a code for it will be sent to anyone who buys Manifesto in the first 2 weeks. The other 2 will be out later in August for Subscribers :) All are exclusive to Bandcamp.
So at first I thought I was making two albums, then three... then the third one made it clear that it wanted to be two separate albums, so I now have four 🤪 Evidence of the most productive two weeks of my recording life. Manifesto is out publicly on Aug 3rd. The other three are subscriber exclusive.
