Alura is late again.
Her mother deems it a nasty habit, one she’s desperate for her daughter to break, always apologizing on her behalf.
“She will be here soon.”
“She isn’t usually so late.”
“Don’t worry, I will have a word with her later.”
That only fuels Alura’s desire for tardiness even more. Most mornings, she’ll pretend to sleep while her maid calls on her. It isn’t until her mother barrels through the doors, screaming her name and shaking her so violently that Alura sits up, yawns, and smiles.
“So sorry, Mother,” she’ll say, voice dripping with honey, “I didn’t want to leave my dream.”
Her mother says dreams are poison to the mind.
