He/Him. Prof. at the University of Michigan's Climate and Space department. Space scientist. Connoisseur of dumb humor. Opinions and stupid jokes are my own.

A trend I've seen in scientific talks this past few months is speakers including an AI-generated diagram only to say, "This is AI, so don't blame ME if it's wrong! Tee-hee!*" Dude. It's YOUR talk. YOU are responsible for its accuracy. Don't offload your laziness to AI. *tee hee added for emphasis.

Great to see StormWall getting a bit more traction in the broader press! Here's a gift link to the @mims.bsky.social story.

A Plan to Stop Solar Storms From Sending Us Back to the Stone Age

The plan involves school-bus-size satellites and a whole lot of salt, and it could provide an ionic ‘air bag’ for the Earth.

The work that @drbwalsh.bsky.social and I did to develop a concept for stopping space weather is now **front page** on the Wall Street Journal. It's been a wild week.

This is why we need continuity of measurements, overlap and redundancy of measurements across different locations! The answer has real world implications for how we run and train models and understand how storms arrive at Earth from the sun!

ICE murdered Renée Good in broad daylight. Less than 3 weeks later, they killed Alex Pretti, shooting him 10 times. Every day, we watch as people are ripped from their cars, their homes, their lives. We can't allow ourselves to look away from this cruelty. Abolish ICE.

Space weather storm is here! ...EARLY! This is a good sign for mid-latitude aurora. Unfortunately, real time solar wind data is giving erroneous velocity data (a near constant 300 km/s). We'll pay attention to density and magnetic field to see how this unfolds.
