A terrific summary. I particularly like the reference to the broader ideas of cognitive science rather than the conversation being narrowed to ‘science of learning.’ A broad understanding of how cognition works is important. #EduSky
Just out: I wrote a post for ASCD that covers some of the key points in my new book (although of course there's lots more in the book!). ascd.org/blogs/redefi...
A wonderful array of techniques to support real student learning. #EduSky
Unlock effective teaching methods with the book "Powerful Teaching" and access research-based strategies, activities, and templates.
Interesting take with some well made points. I guess you have to get creative when you don’t have the knowledge to complete a task. #EduSky
NEW POST: On the Sir Ken Fallacy. A meandering review of Johann Hari's 'Stolen Focus' and the trap that so many commentators fall into when they imagine a world of schooling-utopia (aka anarchy). rebeccabirch.substack.com/p/on-the-sir...
OPAL playtimes are a game-changer! The impact that @playscotland.bsky.social made at Udston Primary is incredible. - get ready to be inspired! 🎥 youtu.be/_rqYFNh0uUU #Edusky #ScotEduSky #Play #OPAL

Went to see a school that have implemented OPAL playtimes today, and I am absolutely buzzing with ideas of how good our playtime can be. It's a project I'm really excited to lead on too, as it's quite different from anything I've led on/implemented before.
A simple but very effective technique. I once wrote a simple two digit by two digit addition sum on the board for a class. By the time I turned around 3 students had already completed it. I then said, Tell me everything you can about this without writing the answer. Heads exploded.
The more time teachers use introducing learning material and practicing with it, the more and better students learn. Unfortunately, teachers often lose lots of valuable time on classroom management issues. #EduSky www.kirschnered.nl/2025/01/12/s...
Will probably be adding this to “The Knowledge Gap” and “The Writing Revolution.” #EduSky
“Reading comprehension isn’t just a skill—it depends on knowledge. Without background knowledge, students struggle to understand what they read.” @natwexler.bsky.social explains why building knowledge is key to literacy success. #SOR #KnowledgeMatters 🔗 open.substack.com/pub/nataliew...
This will be worth listening to. #Edusky
Last night I had the pleasure of participating in a roundtable discussion about biologically primary and secondary knowledge and cognitive load theory, with David Geary, katejonesteach.bsky.social, and John Sweller, organized by Kennet Fröjd. You can hear it here: spoti.fi/3Wt8kvc
Quite common now when ringing companies. However interesting recently when Dutton & wife were mocked online PM Albanese and Prem. Allen both said exactly the same thing. “Families are off limits.” I would have thought a better statement would’ve been “Abuse is off limits.” A fish rots from the head.
How long do you think it will be before boilerplate respectful behaviour responses are automatically added to replies to parent emails in schools? I quite like the wording of this one from Australia Post.
If you’ve spent your career promoting the idea that teaching is about helping students figure things out for themselves, it’s going to be really hard to accept you were wrong and have caused harm.
For those interested in student wellbeing please have a look @drsueroffey.bsky.social #EduSky
I have left X in disgust. Hoping it is more thoughtful, kinder and more positive here. Working towards a world that works for us all.
Might be one worth watching. #EduSky
I just watched the @teacherhead.bsky.social and @emmaturner75.bsky.social Mind the Gap episode 71 with @profcoe.bsky.social. It's a really interesting discussion and a highlight from 2024 youtu.be/8C2Gsl2vwtg?... #EduSky #Evidenceinpractice #Podcast

Wanting to connect with people involved in education. Particularly interested in cognitive science. Following @natwexler.bsky.social , @gregashman.bsky.social @standehaene.bsky.social among others. #EduSky
How do you motivate students (or anyone else)? Enable them to experience success. How do you do that? Rely on principles of cognitive science to teach as clearly as possible. More in my latest post on Minding the Gap: open.substack.com/pub/nataliew...
The Key to Motivating Students--and Maybe Everyone Else Too
Students won’t learn unless they’re motivated. But the best way to motivate them is to enable them to experience achievement.
