Thancred pushes himself past his limits because Ryne has forgiven him despite him never offering an apology, and he offers to scout the situation in Eulmore to escape the sheer depths of her love.
He has craved a family his entire life and now he has a girl who wants him as a father in the way many neglected children want their fathers. When he was a child, if his absent sire had shown up and proclaimed himself a willing father he would have forgiven the man in a second. The desire has led Ryne to him as he to Louisoix. It's unfair to her that it is him she seeks, but rejecting her would only make her pain worse.
He's half asleep from exhaustion but silently passes through the dismal slums beneath Eulmore.
The city proper is well fortified but he keeps an ear out for idle guard chatter. The last time here he was gripping Ryne's hand and dragging her unsteady legs to freedom. She has grown so much since then.
He looks up at the gilded and white buildings above and thinks of cages and fathers and fathers who are cages, and then a thud of something hard collides against his skull and his vision blackens before he can even feel the pain of it.

It has been approximately a week since his capture-the dungeon beneath Eulmore leaves little in the way of daylight, and the changing of the guards is the only time he can track. Ran jit has him at last after years of difficult fox hunts, but does not kill him, which means Thancred is either bait or leverage for bargaining. He is not sure which he prefers.
He is bound with shackles behind his back and a collar keeping him to the wall. It is tight enough that the apple of his throat drags against it when he swallows. He's offered the obligations of food and water, stretched legs and chamberpot, once a day.
The rest of the hours he faces the same stretch of wall beyond his cell bars. At least Ryne got books, he thinks bitterly, and then remembers how weak her muscles were, then; how thin and pale, like a cavefish that has never seen the sun; how much she had never known but was taunted by in the prose of her stories.
He leans his head back against the wall he is chained to and closes his eyes. There is not enough slack to lay down, but he's not sure he'd suffer the indignity of curling up on the floor in front of his captors. That is what this whole situation is: an indignity. He couldn't suffer the thought of being forgiven, of being loved, and so he ordered himself on a lonesome patrol that was unneeded and of which he now pays the consequence. He is a burden on his colleagues twice over.
"Thancred?" a meek voice calls.

His eyes snap open. He straightens his gaze and sees the familiar outline of a girl with natural red hair and wide, still-innocent eyes. She places her tiny hands on two of the bars and peeks her head through.
The cell is dark except for a sconce in the hall. He confirms: "Aye. Me. What are you doing here?" He means to sound gruff but he mostly sounds hoarse.
"I'm here for you," she says. "Are you injured?"
"Guards will make their rounds on the bell. Were you seen?"
"No one is here. The others are causing a fuss upstairs. Are you hurt?"
"Quickly, then. Do you have the key?"
"Thancred," she says, firmly, "are you hurt."
His shoulder is dislocated from a scrap he lost on a meal break.
"No," he says. "That's enough chatter. Hurry."
She pulls a set of keys from the pocket of her dress and fumbles through them. She tries each one on the lock of his cell, and each one fails. She sniffs.
She wipes her hand across her face. She tries another and he sees her choke back even more upset at its failure.
"Ryne," he says. He promised to strive to be better.
"I don't-Apologies. You've done well."

The next key doesn't work either. Above them, a boom of a great battle echoes down into the dungeons. Ryne flinches.
"Ryne,
," he says, "take a breath. Do not heed my
harshness—"
A key clicks and Ryne shoulders open the door.
She stumbles forward and falls to her knees on the grime of the floor at his side. She wraps her arms around him. He is bound and chained and he can go nowhere to escape the affection.
"Ryne," he whispers, because the name is the closest to kindness he has ever offered her.
"I am not upset because of what you're saying," she cries out into his chest. "I am upset because you're sitting here nearly dead. You promised to be my family and then you almost got yourself killed again." She sounds angry now. "You promised."
He takes a breath. "I know," he murmurs. "I know.
You came back to me, and I promised"
She's thumbing at the chains binding him now. She clenches her jaw through her tears. She is strong enough to rescue him but not strong enough to dam up the overflow of her love.
