207. The Trial (Studio Canal, 1962 - Orson Welles) Leaning into absurdity as much as anxiety, this is pitched at a kind of teeth-gritting hysteria. Squirrelly Perkins is perfect, Zagreb offers some brilliant locations and the whole thing is so intense you sometimes miss that it's weirdly funny too

It’s the 50th anniversary of the time Eric Clapton went onstage and told everyone who wasn’t British to leave the room and the country, and was the impetus for Rock Against Racism

206. Disclosure Day (torrent, 2026 - Steven Spielberg) It is a tale Told by a Spielberg, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing. (Excellent cast, wilfully overcomplicated plot, terrible script, lack of anything to engage with emotionally at all).

24. Jeanette Winterson - Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit (1985) My reading mojo appeared to go on holiday for most of July so this fairly brief book took ages: partly anhedonia, I think, and partly because it's not as engaging as I remember it 40 years later. 1/2

Catching up on this year's University Challenge (it seems to start earlier every year etc), whoever was in charge of Photoshopping the teams onto the background totally messed up this guy's hair

204. Are We Good? (Criterion, 2025 - Steven Feinartz) A solid documentary about grouchy, angry, insightful Maron framed against the loss of his partner. Fairly standard doc stuff, although you get a sense Maron regrets getting involved. But he's endlessly watchable whatever he's in really.

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

Today's post. That's now a copy of every commercially available on vinyl Bobbie Gentry album (but not all the variations because I'm not mad). Some beautiful but austere suomalainen holy music A wonderful package for an excellent album on the magnificent Wrong Speed Records

203. They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (torrent, 1969 - Sydney Pollack) 'But somehow they can’t stop, and as the hundreds and thousands of hours of weariness and futility begin to accumulate, the great dance marathon begins to look more and more like life.' - Roger Ebert 1/2

Sat in the hospital being subjected to some dance pop radio station. I've just heard a version of Dancing On My Own that's so anodyne, asinine, utterly free of the heartbreak and the euphoria of the original. Just vapid + joyless + sexless and beige How can someone misunderstand a song so badly?

Finished the big rewatch of the main Battlestar Galactica (just the prequels to go). The first two seasons and the New Caprica section of season 3 are stunning, full of politics, morality, big ideas and a cracking story. Well acted, shot, it looked great... 1/2
