Great Substack about UPA, the animation studio that revolutionized cartoons in the 1950s. Founded by the leftist animators who were purged by Walt Disney during the infamous 1941 strike, it was UPA that dragged animation into midcentury mod. Mr. Magoo was their big hit.

The book Inside UPA is a visual tour of one of the greatest animation studios of all time. With its author's permission, we've shared the whole thing online for free. Our latest issue dives into the book and UPA's place in animation history: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/stepping-i...

Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

"i don't have any time" it's okay me neither. it's fine if it takes you months or years. it's fine if you never finish. just give it a shot, you might like it. "it's gonna be bad" that's okay. humans need to make bad art to live.

the existing indie comics culture is, in large parts, built upon prestige and legitimacy-seeking and career-building, upon gatekeeping and pretension and tastemaking and curation. i'm not saying any of this is evil. but there is a reason why the community remains niche while comiket looks like this

Im going to try my best to get the pages for the next character out on schedule. I might take a week break, depending on how my workload goes this week. I’ve had a busy few weeks so I might be behind a little. That said, you can read this entire first introduction now while you wait!

We have reached the end of Luke’s introduction!!! Thank you for reading so far! Very soon we will meet someone quite interesting…

A comic. Lilah and Luke sit in silence.
Luke: I’m for real!

Luke pops the rubber band off a stack of dollar bills.
Luke: man, whatever.

Luke tosses the bills into the air while Lilah dances with a grin. The dollars transition down the page to a final silhouetted shot of Luke riding his motorcycle into the night after he’s left the club.
