Was in New York again last week and it struck me that a minor but possibly underrated reason for NYC’s unusually strong literary culture (compared to other US cities) is that many people’s main mode of transportation is a passive one where they intermittently lose cell service.

For once I got out of KC on the right weather day! Glorious!

A fun meritocracy thought experiment: if you want back in time with all of the ideas of today in your head, would you be an economic success? Feels like it would still take a lot of luck and timing, which sorta undermines the whole idea that the best ideas win.

I'm excited for a @royals.com urban ballpark, but let's make it an urban ballpark. That means not retrofitting the city to speed cars in and out, but connecting it to the neighborhood with bike and pedestrian infrastructure and solid transit — making it easier to get there on foot and on a bike.

This is actually a sign of connection and empathy.

People are making fun of AOC for having a slight southern accent while speaking in Memphis but they clearly don’t know the pain of habitually and unconsciously imitating the speaking style of the people around you

Stop buying stuff from Amazon. For their shady practices, sure. But also for the vitality of your community, lest we all sequester in our homes with the public realm populated only by Amazon trucks and Door Dash drivers.

Reminded of my favorite KC waterway fun fact: suburbanites love to disparage Brush Creek, calling it Flush Creek. But it's Johnson County, KS paving the prairie that rushes flood water through KCMO and causes sewer overflows.

The Kansas City World Cup experience is one for the history books & the KC Streetcar has the numbers to prove it! Multiple ridership records were broken, demonstrating how important public transit was in getting visitors & residents where they needed to go. Let's ride!

Can't help but cringe when dissenters at public meetings accuse a developer or investor of "just wanting to make money." That's literally their job. And hey, I've got problems with this economic system too, but that's a different meeting. We need to show up as serious, informed participants.

This morning at the coffeeshop, more people are chatting with one another, reading books or writing on paper than are starting at laptops! As it should be!

Proof other cities are delivering better trip times and rider experiences by continuing to push signal priority and dwell times. We should do this too. No @kcstreetcar.org with 100+ passengers should ever stop at a light for a handful of drivers.

I am so sad to see our World Cup era end. For a moment, we saw KC as it always should be. Activity, density, diversity, regional transit, constantly buzzing streetcars, popups, new retail, special events, a worldly sports culture. It's been a dream. I don't want to go back.

I teared up, y'all. The best part of Fan Fest was buried on lazy Thursday: KCAI's POPTRA. Costumes and fashion, dance, singing, drag, drumline, puppetry... queer in every sense of the word, diverse, sometimes silly, beautiful. Just oozing with creativity and culture. That's my Kansas City.

There's a segment of lefty thinking that just wants to fight over the remaining scraps of a sinking ship. We'd still be a ghost town if this thinking prevailed. Tourism is huge for local economies. Fight over the priorities for how we grow and invest as we build back our urban economy instead.

As we rally behind the US Men's National Team during an ugly political time, let's not forget that two of our stars are products of birthright citizenship, three others are of mixed heritage and foreign birth, and several are children of immigrants. Our multiculturalism makes us better.

I know it is just soccer banter, but all of this "can't find Bosnia on a map" business is embarrassing. Not a flex to show your own ignorance and reinforce the idea that Americans are completely insular and ignorant about the world. It was part of Yugoslavia!
