The motte at #Berkhamstead Castle, #Hertfordshire, pictured on a visit in August 2012. It is about 14m tall and plainly visible from the nearby railway line - always a highlight of train journeys from home in the north west to & from Euston. #MotteMonday

I called into Pickering on the way home from a work trip yesterday, and was lucky to bump into 60163 Tornado - the '21st century steam locomotive', completed in 2008, the first since 1960. The #NYMR never disappoints. #Railways #Steam

It is worrying to hear of the threat to #JodrellBank. Apart from its scientific contribution, it is a cultural and physical reference point for generations, hereabouts. Less well known, the #LovellTelescope uses turret parts from #FirstWorldWar battleships HMS Revenge & HMS Royal Sovereign. 📷 mine

NEWS: Doncaster Dome (FaulknerBrowns, 1987-89) has reopened to the public following a 2 year, £15 million project to refurbish the pools, flumes, changing area, mechanical heating and water filter system. The Postmodern leisure centre was Grade II listed in 2023 after an application by C20 Society.

Just given my first tour of Norman Cross. Given what I knew about the Napoleonic war before Friday could be written on the back of a postage stamp, I think it went OK.

I had replied to the below: Paper maps are great. Never run out of juice, let you see the close-up detail and the big picture at the same time (because they're three feet wide, unlike your phone), and the more you use them the more you learn your way around without them, unlike obeying a machine.
