So a whole lot of my talented Humanities colleagues are now unemployed as of today. A lot of understandable concern over Exeter. But for over two decades my Hums colleagues were in the top quartile for their research contribution to society. History top 10. Now gone with only a national whisper.

The biggest difficulty for trans rights – the general public seems to believe the new guidance makes it possible to exclude eg trans women from women's services in some circumstances. No. This was the previous position. The current guidance requires their exclusion, always, regardless of context.

Donation ‘shifted Lib Dem women stance’ Geraldine Scott Sir Ed Davey is accused of softening his position The Liberal Democrats have been accused of softening their position on women’s rights after accepting hundreds of thousands of pounds from one of Britain’s biggest financial backers of transgender causes. Sex Matters, the campaign group, said that the timing of a series of policy interventions by Sir Ed Davey and senior Liberal Democrats raised questions about whether the party’s position had shifted after donations from Simon Ruddick, a financier who has publicly described support for trans communities as a priority. Electoral Commission records show that Ruddick has donated more than £200,000 to the party this year. In an interview published by the LGBT charity GiveOut, he said that he had chosen to support transgender people because they were a “tiny and disproportionately oppressed” community whose rights were under attack. The Equality and Human Rights Commission’s (EHRC) code of practice, laid before parliament in May, gives guidance after the Supreme Court’s ruling in April last year that sex in the Equality Act 2010 refers to biological sex. It says that a service must be provided on the basis of biological sex to qualify as single-sex under the act, meaning trans women should not be admitted to women’s toilets, changing rooms and other female-only facilities.
