Meet the team! Today’s spotlight: Erin Scott ✨ Erin is a PhD student working to characterize a family of dopamine sensors for the dLight 3.0 series. She is also developing a sensor for alpha-synuclein, a toxic protein heavily implicated in Parkinson’s disease.

Complex I is the largest complex of the electron transport chain and the entry point for electrons that power ATP production. New work from Core Investigator Isha Jain and team identifies THAP12 as a dedicated transcription factor controlling how much Complex I a cell builds.

Thanks to @bipolardiscoveries.org for supporting our work on the circuit-level basis of bipolar disorder! By uniting neurosurgery, neuroscience, and psychiatry, our unique multidisciplinary team is unlocking vital new insights into how the human brain works. More to come soon!

🧠 BD² PI @ignaciosaezphd.bsky.social and his team are using deep brain stimulation and epilepsy-based brain recordings to better understand the circuits that drive mood changes in bipolar disorder. The more we learn about these circuits, the closer we get to treatments tailored to brain biology.

Effective treatments for mitochondrial disease are scarce. A new paper in Nature Metabolism from Core Investigator Isha Jain and team offers one, showing that breathing low-oxygen air nearly triples lifespan in a mouse model of HTRA2 deficiency.

We just wrapped our first cycle of Fast Grants: we’re funding 37 projects across diagnostics, AI scientists, phage therapies, and more. Global demand for fast, flexible research funding is even larger than we expected, and it’s shaping how we’re building Cycle 2 this fall. More to come soon.

Two milestones in the Preston Lab this week 🎉 1️⃣ Andrei Amatuni defended his dissertation proposal! His work asks how we learn the hidden structure of experience & use it to reason in new situations + how that ability develops from childhood to adulthood. Congrats, Andrei!

Science Fellow Jingtian Zhou and colleagues traced stress-driven glioma growth in mice to a bone marrow-derived macrophage that infiltrates the brain tumor and acts on the immune environment rather than the tumor cells.

As kids break for summer, it’s important to talk with them about #cannabis use. The cannabis products sold today have a high THC content, risking addiction and long-term effects on developing brains 🧠 Empower kids to make the right decisions for a happy and healthy summer ☀️

Start assembling your team because the 2026 Virtual Cell Challenge officially kicks off on Thursday, August 20. This is round two of our global competition to understand and predict how cells respond to internal cues and external stimuli.

Cells control gene expression through combinatorial interactions between readers, writers, and erasers of chromatin marks, but most epigenetic editing tools rely on a single effector in isolation. COMBINE is the first platform to test those combinations at scale, screening 50,000+ effector pairs.

Congrats to @brianhie.bsky.social, @synbiogaolab.bsky.social, & team on Germinal, now out in NatBiotech. Their pipeline designs epitope-targeted antibodies with nanomolar affinity while testing only tens of designs per target, making antibody design far more accessible. nature.com/articles/s41...

In another preprint from the @brianhie.bsky.social Lab and @synbiogaolab.bsky.social, they introduce Germinal, a generative AI system for de novo antibody design. Germinal produces functional nanobodies in just dozens of tests, making custom antibody design more accessible than ever before.

Mentorship works best when we stop expecting one person to do all the mentoring. We talk about needing "a mentor," singular. But a better model is constellation mentoring: a set of relationships that together give us what we need, shifting as we do. We all need a constellation!
