On Germany: something I can’t stand is the idea that the Left and the Green parties haven’t offed arguments about the cost of living. They have! It’s just that they haven’t offered *hate*. The AfD have offered hate, that is their most passionate offering, that is primarily why they are thriving.

My main two general takeaways as a GDR historian on this election (which will probably be painfully familiar to anyone who has followed me for a while) 1. Equating the AfD with a residual mass authoritarian personality is an oversimplification that obscures effects of post-89 social collapse...

Or, in fact, not really a news story at all. I don’t believe at all that this was nationally important and certainly not “third on the BBC 6 o’clock news” important as a story. Cofnas started all of this because he’s a racist and the media ran with it.
