At Erik's funeral yesterday the first reading was James K Baxter 'High Country Weather' (1945) It was published in Blow, wind of fruitfulness (1948) but had earlier appeared in Art in New Zealand (1946) so written when a teen. A revelation despite our JKB memorial section in the King's HS library.

In my History Hons year Erik would continue that old Otago tradition of inviting his students for a beer on a Friday avo with the workers in the downstairs corner bar of the Cook (he was after all first and foremost a labour historian). This Friday please join me in raising a glass to his memory. 🍻

On this 73rd anniversary of the Korean War Armistice a wee yarn from 2IC 16 Field Regiment Major Richard Webb who recalled one of the many goodwill visits that Australians made to the Kiwi gunners’ camp was to desecrate their hillside kiwi emblem, altering it to resemble a kangaroo! 🦘😄
95 years ago today these patients at Queen Mary Hospital for Sick and Wounded Soldiers, Hanmer Springs had not lost their sense of humour posing as the Turf Turners and Worm Disturbers Association of Hanmer. The oversized name tags indicate the officers holders. We will remember them.
Remembering Prof Jeff Grey who sadly died 10 years ago today. Seen here at the 1999 Australian Defence Force Academy UNSW Canberra graduation and afterwards we had a lovely dinner and an opportunity to thank him and his great friend Peter Dennis for their finest pastoral care of a Kiwi PhD.
