From my first shoot with Jillian Ann who we all miss terribly since her tragic passing a few years ago. A deeply philosophical soul, it was a joy to spend time with her both personally and creatively. We shot this in the back of my old place in Hollywood with my Mamiya 645 with available light.

On this Memorial Day, I pay tribute to my brother Rob who lost his life in Vietnam. I was only 3 years old when it happened but was always aware of my family’s loss growing up. That’s why I never take it for granted the freedoms that he and other brave souls fought for. See ALT TEXT for more. 💜

As I often do on Memorial Day, I pay respect to my fallen brother Rob who was killed in Vietnam when I was only three years old. I'm always reminded of the discussion between Stephen Colbert and Anderson Cooper. Both experienced family death at the age of ten. Colbert lost his father and two brothers in a plane crash, and Cooper lost his father to a heart attack. At one point during the interview, Cooper got emotional when asking Colbert about comments he once made about learning to “love the thing that I most wish had not happened.” Colbert had asked, "What punishments of God are not gifts?". Cooper asked him if he really believed that. Colbert answered, "Yes. It’s a gift to exist and with existence comes suffering. There’s no escaping that.” Colbert continued to explain, “What do you get from loss? You get awareness of other people’s loss, which allows you to connect with that other person, which allows you to love more deeply and to understand what it’s like to be a human being if it’s true that all humans suffer.” That quote hit me hard. One of my earliest memories was when the army men came to the house to break the news to my parents that their son had been killed. Seeing my mom screaming into a pillow face down on the sofa in extreme anguish was terrifying and confusing to this little three-year-old boy. As horrible as that moment was, it introduced to me one of my first ever emotions - empathy. From that moment on, I was always mindful of being respectful and kind to my parents. I had a personal mission to never upset them. In hindsight, and after hearing Colbert's words, that horrendous moment made me a better person. It engrained within me a moral code which I adhere to to this day. And to Rob, I love you and will carry you within me forever. 💜
