Most of Burnham's promises were for policies to be introduced after the next GE, the national care service, reform of the voting system, closer ties with the EU, all put off until after the next GE - political code for ‘never’. It was a very traditional Labour speech, the jam is always tomorrow.

An independent country in the EU is still independent but is a member of a strong union with benefits and corresponding responsibilities. Scotland, in the UK, is not independent. Once we leave we'll go our own way but have a relationship with the UK without abuse.
