❓What was decided in Santa Marta on fossil fuel subsidies? Let's have a look at the groundbreaking conference that took place in Colombia to discuss transitioning away from fossil fuels. ⤵️ Here are the co-host takeaways: static1.squarespace.com/static/68dc9...
39 countries cut energy taxes after the Iran war. Politically popular but self-defeating: untargeted subsidies blunt the price signals, lead to higher demand, cost the tax payer significantly more and provide less incentive to invest in alternatives.
⤵️ COFFIS countries need to start delivering.
Fossil fuel subsidies amounted to +USD 921bn in 2024. While often well intentioned these measures largely benefit the wealthy, lock in fossil fuel dependence, + carry energy security risks. In Santa Marta join us for a session focused on best practices for reform: iisd.org/events/santa... 2/3

COP30 FOSSIL FUEL ROADMAP: We've now seen the full list of 82 countries supporting some sort of roadmap on transitioning away from fossil fuels docs.google.com/spre... 1/2
Press conference room absolutely packed at #COP30 as 20+ ministers gather to call for a roadmap away from fossil fuels to be a key outcome of this summit (Many more countries have expressed their support behind the scenes)
That's pretty weak phrasing - Parties could be urged to do a lot more, such as submit national inventories of their fossil fuel subsidies and action plans for gradually phasing them out.
⬇️ Looking at the current negotiation text of the COP30 cover decision 👀 (This is not the first time fossil fuel subsidy phase out appears in a decision, but last year in Baku, it was not mentioned)
Next, fossil fuel subsidies. "Urges Parties to work together towards phasing out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies that do not address energy poverty or just transitions, as soon as possible."
#Cambodia just became the 18th country to officially support the #FossilFuelTreaty! 🇰🇭 At #COP30 in Belém, Cambodia affirmed their commitment to a fast, fair and financed global transition aligned with a low-carbon, climate-resilient future. 🔗 FossilFuelTreaty.org/cambodia%EF%...
