SCREEN ACT: [S.737] - full age verification. (biometric scans, ID uploads, background checks) - Deeply unsafe for personal and data privacy. Security/data breeches are rampant, and uploading so much sensative data to every single site is just asking for mass ID theft - ID verification is much, much harder on small websites than larget ones, creating a chilling effect and stifling speech for anyone that isn't a massive corporation - Draw comparison to UK's OSA (Online Safety Act) and the backlash it is receivingKOSA: [S.1748] - creates "duty of care", meaning that texh companies and platform giants would be required to take steps to prevent potentially harmful encounters, such as posts about eating disorders and instance of online bullying, from impacting minors - who gets to decide what is or is not "unsafe for minors"? Especially under the current administration - it will block access to important info minors could use to keep themselves safe or advocate for themselves. Ex: sex ed - the vague nature of the bill almost certainly target LGBT content under the guise of "protecting children"INTERASTATE OBSCENITY DEFINITION ACT: [S.1671] - seeks to define "obscenity" for purposes of the Communications Act of 1934 and other purposes. - define "obscenity" as media that "appeals to prurient interest in nudity, sex, or erection", depicts sexual acts/genitals/exhibition intended to sexually gratify a person and "lack artistic value" - tldr, wants to make everything pornographic, or which the state can CALL pornographic, "obscene". Obscenity is not protected speech and therefore can be censored and criminalized - blatant attempt to censor free speech and criminalize marginalized groups under the guise of "obscenity"

NEWS: SCOTUS allows Mississippi to enforce a restrictive internet-access law without explanation. Kavanaugh writes to say it is likely unconstitutional but he is voting to allow it, only repeating the legal rule for his reasoning. No one else wrote a word. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

LYNN FITCH, ATTORNEY GENERAL OF MISSISSIPPI ON APPLICATION TO VACATE STAY [August 14, 2025] The application to vacate stay presented to JUSTICE ALITO and by him referred to the Court is denied. JUSTICE KAVANAUGH, concurring in the denial of the application to vacate stay. I concur in the Court's denial of NetChoice's application for interim relief because NetChoice has not sufficiently demonstrated that the balance of harms and equities favors it at this time. To be clear, NetChoice has, in my view, demonstrated that it is likely to succeed on the merits-namely, that enforcement of the Mississippi law would likely violate its members' First Amendment rights under this Court's precedents. See Moody v. NetChoice, LLC, 603 U. S. 707 (2024); Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Assn., 564 U. S. 786 (2011); cf. Free Speech Coalition, Inc. v. Paxton, 606 U.S. _ (2025).
