WELCOME TO VIOLENT CITY

i still hate the doom "you control the buttons you press" tweet and that people repost it like it's real wisdom. fundamentally unserious approach to game design. that is actually very much what I buy a video game for. are the buttons fun to press. if there is bad button why did you put bad button

In playing so much final fight I’ve come to the conclusion that a fantastic arcade title isn’t really adjacent to it being intuitive or easy to 1cc but rather how much it makes that gradient of improvement really clear and how much credits that ends up costing you

Small update on the Megadrive *rally game* ? I added sprites and did some optimization so CPU is still at 70% usage with a stable 60 fps. I'm a bit disappointed by the sprite width limit per-line. I wanted a lot more dense vegetation but it's not possible with sprites. I'll try other methods.

I often see talk among game designers, especially arcade/niche game designers about tricking normies into liking something or other. I think it's prob better to do the exact opposite and be as clear, blunt & honest as possible through your game's design itself

Whilst I'm righting 'wrong info on the internet that like 2 people might care about', Kenji Kaido the game's designer said he came up with the name ages ago & thought it would be good for a shmup. Then he used it for this game & no-one queried it, so it stuck. He smoked Camel cigarettes and ....

part of an IGCC interview with Kenji Kaido & other Taito staff about the making of Cameltry, published when the game came to the Egret II Mini. He's appearing on Hamster's stream tomorrow & will no doubt cover it there too

btw, the title "Cameltry" was apparently the result of one of those gonzo initiatives from Taito management—there was a brief window where they were making devs pick names from a pre-approved book of random titles, and this was one of em (as was Volfied, iirc)

Since I'm the the one who wrote the article, I looked back into the code. For the two desert stages (Trick Trap Track / Whirlwind Break), if you cleared the round before it (Space Walker / Magician's Escape) with 1.0 seconds or less on the clock, the camel will appear. tcrf.net/Cameltry_(Ar...

As pointed out by @eonstro.bsky.social this camel that tcrf has listed as an unused sprite is definitely being used in the game. He's certainly not in this stage every time though The player's score's pretty bad, so maybe you need a low score / bad times for him to show up? Will need to investigate

"Time heals all wounds" mushy, sentimental, naively presents healing as inevitable entropy, external locus of control "All fires die but the ones you feed" logical, makes you sound like a jrpg villain, internal locus, gives merit to acceptance but also more healthy things like revenge and hatred
