In fairness, this is because most tellings of Smalls' life (aside from my own, of course), ends at the beginning. Robert Smalls was in 17 battles in the Civil War. There was plenty of violence, it's just not often illustrated. #edusky #booksky #blackbooksky #blacksky www.amazon.com/dp/B0DV3W4N12

It was on the evening of May 12, 1862 that Robert Smalls gathered all the families on "The Planter." He donned the captain's uniform and in the early morning would steal the Confederate ship to sail past the blockade to freedom and safe waters with the United States Navy

For Veterans Day: a Graphic Novel series about THE FIRST BLACK CAPTAIN OF A US MILITARY VESSEL. “Captain Robert Smalls: The Greatest Civil War Hero" by DaShan Thomas #VeteransDay #edusky #USDemocracy #booksky #blackbooksky #blacksky #libsky AT INGRAM, CaptainSmalls.com, AMAZON & A LIBRARY NEAR U!

A few panels from "Captain Robert Smalls: The Greatest Civil War Hero - Book 2", by DaShan Thomas are presented in this graphic.

In panel one, Captain Robert Smalls and his second in command Samuels are dressed in Union uniforms, and are bathed in the light of a nearby explosion. They stand on the deck of a ship which is listing hard to the side from the impact of the explosion on a nearby ship. The explosion is depicted towards the right of the image. It is huge and made of angry shades of red, yellow and orange against the brilliant blue of the sea.

Samuels asks Robert: "How much Black Powder?! did Eddie Use?!?!"

"All of it I suppose," Robert replies. "Let me tell you something about Eddie, Eddie don't like to do stuff twice! TIME TO GO!!!"

The next panel shows two white Union officers lifting an unconscious Confederate. Robert Smalls tells them "Put that captive in the brig next to that coward Ex-Captain."

"Yes Sir!!!" they both say. One officer is David Hunter. The other says to Hunter "Can Smalls bark orders at us? You are a General."

"Smalls is the Captain of this boat now," David Hunter says. "Captains are the Gods of their Ship. Smalls is your Lord & Savior."

"AHEAD FULL!! Fire! on that Confederate ship!!!" Robert says to Samuels. "Sir, Yes Sir!" yells Samuels. He hollers ahead to someone who is off-camera: '"AHEAD FULL!!!!"

In the final panel, we see two Black Union soldiers setting off a canon. They both cover their heads and ears to protect themselves from the blast.

The book cover of “Captain Robert Smalls: The Greatest Civil War Hero” (Unabridged) by DaShan Thomas is at the top. Beneath it, words read: "Discover the Heroic Journey of Captain Robert Smalls: The Greatest Civil War Hero." In front of the cover are letters reading "CaptainSmalls.com". Behind the words and the cover is a red explosive background. Surrounding it all, near the edge, is a red border with a slight glow.

A handsome Black Man in a Civil War Era Union Army Uniform gazes to his right. Behind him, perhaps also in the back of his mind, Fort Sumter explodes under enemy fire. Across his shoulder is the web address CaptainSmalls.com.

The man is Real Life Black Hero Captain Robert Smalls, from the graphic novel "Captain Robert Smalls: The Greatest Civil War Hero" by author & illustrator DaShan Thomas - available at Bookshop, Etsy & Amazon.

Captain Robert Smalls was an enslaved man who commandeered the Confederate steam ship "Planter" with his wife, family and friends - and their wives and families, sailed the Steamer to freedom, and became a titan of the Union Army in the Civil War.

An artistic depiction of Robert Smalls and his Second in Command from the Graphic Novel “Captain Robert Smalls: The Greatest Civil War Hero” (Unabridged) by DaShan Thomas. Both are handsome Black Men. They are both wearing Civil War-Era blue Union uniforms, and stand in front of a ship wheel. Behind the ship wheel are windows out to the sea. In front of the picture are letters reading "CaptainSmalls.com". Bordering the picture is a red explosive background.
