Excited to share two preprints for companion papers that examine the statistics of bedload motion! We used high-resolution imagery to capture grain tracks from flume experiments across a range of fluid shear stresses. We also subject the sand bed to "stress history" to see how grain motion changes.

I finally got around to learning about version control and using Git and Github. I've been putting it off, but it's secretly Totally Fine and actually better than having 5+ scripts named things like plottracks, plottracks_old, and plottracks_party, then forgetting why you named your code "party"

What if you laid out all the meanders of a river along a straight line, so that you can break the river into straight-ish segments and fill arbitrary spaces? This is the Purus River in Brazil; you can see how it is getting wider and the meanders are getting larger in the downstream direction

One of my favorite EFML traditions is the well-decorated PhD defense cakes. This time around we celebrated Dr. Boles with a coral reef cake - complete with spur and groove formations!

Chocolate cake decorated to look like a coral reef. The top of the cake has ridges with candy pieces to resemble corals, and depressions with graham cracker crumb to resemble sand. Blue icing and fruit roll-ups are meant to resemble waves.

1/ I am seeing a lot of comments on the slashing of NIH support along the lines of “universities should just spend their huge endowments.” I’m the last person to cheer on the institutional stratification rising endowments have contributed to. But let me explain why this is not a solution.
