(cc @subsolum.bsky.social)
Weekend field visit to the Tourbières de Prénovel (#Jura, France) – a textbook example of how substrate permeability governs landscape patterns. Impermeable layers retain water, forming peat bogs , while permeable zones drain quickly, favoring dry forested ridges.
With so much weighing on the scientific community right now, I find solace in the resilience of the natural world—like these beautiful biocrusts continually holding the desert together.

Ice may be present a few centimetres below the Moon’s surface in more areas of the lunar polar regions than was previously thought due to large variations in surface temperatures, according to a study in Communications Earth & Environment. https://go.nature.com/4i89O6S 🔭 🧪
A study in Nature Communications attributes Mars’ distinctive red colour to ferrihydrite, a type of rust mineral. The finding suggests Mars experienced a cold and wet environment before transitioning to its current desert state. https://go.nature.com/4iiRKGV 🧪 🔭

It's #DarwinDay. He was a father of #soilscience #pedology, by combining his knowledge of #geology and #biology, he published “The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms.” In this book you can see one of the first #soilhorizon designation A,B,C.
Hello at BlueSky! We are informing on work advancing our knowledge on soils in all regions of the world and formed in different pedo-climatic zones. Looking forward to interacting with a large soil science community! Explore our webpage for more insights. www.sciencedirect.com/journal/geod...

🌵✨ When we say biocrusts are "the coral reefs of the desert," we mean it—just look at these vibrant colors! 🟠🟡🔵🔴 They're also reef-like in their roles stabilizing soil, reducing erosion, retaining moisture, and fixing nitrogen 🌿
I am a little late for #worldsoilday but here is my all time favourite: Latossolo Vermelho perférrico (Hyperferritic Ferralsol?), developed from itabirite - a hematite-quartz metamorphic rock that gives name to my hometown. These soils have up to 95% of Fe oxides and oxyhydroxides!! (1/3)
For today's (somewhat late) #Fridayfold, I'm going smaller in scale. Here are some beautiful soft sediment deformation structures I spotted when exploring the Oamaru volcanic field #geology #earthscience #womeninSTEM
#Borobudur temple in Java #indonesia last year, the offsets between the stone blocks at the base of the temple could be linked to past #earthquakes ? Dear paleosismologists any thoughs or studies on that? @paleoseismicity.bsky.social #activetectonics #archeosismology ugm.ac.id/en/news/1635...
