An interesting read. I remember travelling across the US by car in the late 80s. Pulled into a gas station. Attendant said Where you boys heading? Told him Phoenix. He said, Phoenix? Shit. That place hot even when it cloudy. Never forgotten the moment or the line.

I had two great English teachers. Bob Jope, who leant 12 year old me his copy of Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks to teach me lyricism. And James Loader, who, on having to teach 16 year old boys Pride & Prejudice, announced, Gentlemen, Jane Austen was a suppressed lesbian & you’re going to find out why.

The first of August, then, a month that always feel like the height of summer yet tethered to the ropes of Autumn, being dragged reluctantly toward the setting sun.
Read a short story about three weeks ago and it’s still going round and round in my head. Did he ever get out of there? Did he ever find her? Did she ever get caught? Had she done it before? And that’s why I love short stories. So much told so briefly. Which is why we do what we do. #shortstories

The book that probably gave me the passion for single short stories as individual books. 30 pages of loveliness, published by Dents in 1972. Thomas’s ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’ exists in a similar volume. Wonderful things.
