Would be interesting if some wonks did a benefit-cost-ratio analysis of how much this would cost relative to building and staffing new prisons to house an army of starving shoplifters but easier to chase lowest common denominator votes with TikTok sloganeering about making streets safe.

Stop criminalising poverty. Educate young lawbreakers instead of institutionalising them.

At a conference a few years ago I was told that in Norway once convicted you don’t necessarily go to prison right away: you often have to wait for a place to come up, like you wait for an operation in the NHS. It’s a fascinatingly different perspective.
Liddle was an appalling person: selfish, narcissistic, violent in his personal life; racist, misogynist, a supporter of child pornography in his public one. None of those are to be “disagreed” with; they are to be condemned. What Goldacre reveals about himself here is unclear, but probably not good.
