So, uhhhh... KSM Anime over in Germany announced over the weekend that it had licensed the first three seasons of Slayers, among other titles. I think this is the first license for something known to be an Enoki Films title since 2022, when Discotek suddenly had to stop printing its Enoki releases.

While this was poked fun at by some at the time of initial release as an oversight, the fact that a performer played by a man is presented as passing as a woman without a sense of irony or mockery does add an interesting bit of texture to the play with gender present in the original work.

A fun quirk of Mospeada's adaptation as Robotech, while it retains Yellow's double identity, it eschews the dual role of Hirotaka Suzuoki and Mine Matsuki in portraying their different gender presentations. Instead, Cam Clarke performs speaking roles, while Michael Bradley is their singing voice.

Another strong, pre-Gundam example from the 20th episode of Daitarn 3, with Reika trapped in a space pod that more closely mirrors the framing of Zeta Gundam's iconic shot of Hilda trapped in the capsule from episode 3.

Love that Tomino's been doing the "People Stuck in Space Capsules" thing since the actual first thing he directed. From Episode 96 of Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) "Robot Future", Tomino's debut as episode director and storyboard artist.

Revisited Tezuka's Metropolis manga for a discussion of the 2001 film, and I do miss some of the idiosyncratic play with gender he does with Michi. Most amusingly, there is a button in the back of Michi's throat that switches their gender presentation and the visual of hitting it is quite good.

Wonderful getting to discuss another Rintaro film after chatting about Galaxy Express 999 a while back! In typical Rintaro fashion it's deeply beautiful, quite dense, and a smidge messy in a way that makes it an exceptional Tezuka adaptation! Also, here's Tomino and Dezaki at the film's premiere.

Me and Emily both went through the truly dire Chiaki Konaka-penned GR: Giant Robo as a part of our homework for this one. It's mostly just especially dull and rather poorly assembled, but we refer to the two standout moments from the 12th episode on this BFF and feel they're worth worth sharing.
