Kansas City, the smallest World Cup host city, had such an insufficient public transit system to host the tournament that it had to build a a new, secondary transit system just to get fans where they need to go. Except that will disappear when the crowds leave.

Thanks to your efforts, we sent hundreds of emails to city council and secured an additional $6 million in funding for buses! While we are thrilled that this money will prevent cuts, it doesn’t fill the entire funding gap that would allow KCATA to maintain full service.

Joint Statement to Mayor Quinton Lucas and KCMO City Council: Reject KCATA Service Cuts and Fully Fund Our Transit

Whether we are Black, white, or Brown; East of Troost or West of Troost, North of the river or South of the river, we want our communities to be connected, inclusive and vibrant.
As organizations representing thousands of Kansas City residents, we write to express our deep concern about the city's current budget proposal for the Kansas City Area Transit Authority (KCATA). The current budget you are considering will cut 13 major bus routes and up to 175 good-paying union bus driver and maintenance jobs, as well as reducing frequency, operating hours and weekend service.

It will also suspend the IRIS microtransit program and eliminate the jobs of as many as 100 IRIS drivers. Workers, riders, and our environment cannot afford these cuts.
These cuts would create a transit crisis in our city at precisely the wrong moment. As we work to build a more equitable Kansas City and prepare for increased visibility during the 2026 World Cup, dismantling our public transportation infrastructure sends the wrong message about our priorities and values.
We urge you to keep our public transit system whole by fully funding KCATA’s budget in the upcoming fiscal year and rejecting any and all proposed service cuts for the transit agency as you finalize the City budget this month.

You can say routes will be saved but if the money isn’t there, the cuts will happen. If not the routes, it will be longer wait times. Just b/c this wasn’t public until recently doesn’t mean city public works havnt been collaborating w/ kcata for months on plans to gut service

On buses, we will demand based on our funding to the regional system (KCATA), that Kansas City routes should be retained unless routes are reduced in collaboration with City Council. We don't want to learn them late either.
