That was a peak sports watching experience. Thank you, Cabo Verde. I have been watching sports since I was a little boy, and never saw anything like that.

In my youth, I would read the Dumpster Fire series first thing in the morning. Nowadays, I deal with work, The World Cup, the kids, have dinner and leisurely savour reading this with a wee dram. Enjoy, Eagles fans.

"Tulsky was born in Philadelphia, growing up a sports fan. He'd watch Mike Schmidt and the Phillies at The Vet and still lets an occasional "Go Birds!" slip out during NFL season." Congratulation to Eagles fan / analytics nerd Eric Tulsky on his first Stanley Cup. www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/...
How the Hurricanes' jock-nerd alliance won the Stanley Cup
Coach Rod Brind'Amour and GM Eric Tulsky blended the perfect recipe, creating a team that won its first Cup in 20 years -- and will be back for more.

Howie Roseman: “We’ve always been in the mindset a pick is a pick — a first-round pick is a first-round pick. Doesn’t matter. Teams are still going to be playing football in 2028." Discount rates, for non-financial assets, are undertheorized. stafforini.com/works/cowen-...

Really enjoyed this episode wherein 2 of the smartest (genuine, not snark) football commentators praise a head coach who eschews modern load management / sports science as well as fourth down analytics. Model endogeneity is underappreciated.
New pod! Picking the top ten coaches and top five GMs with @sheilkapadia.bsky.social Lots of fun debate in this one 👇 🎧: apple.co/4eKKiWz 📺: youtu.be/DFTJvwQsLRQ?...
“Best player available” is inexorably theory-laden. Implicit therein is positional value.
Picking at 20, the Eagles chose A) a player who had fallen vs. consensus (falling 7 spots from 13th in GrindingTheMocks) and B) a top tier position in terms of value. I don't know anything about the player, except that he gives a great interview. But A and B above indicate sound process.
Using market-derived positional value, the highest paid positions are: Tier of its own: QB Tier 2: Edge & WR Tier 3: OT & CB The rookie wage scale is fixed. To maximize your odds of achieving surplus value in the first round (especially in the top 3/4 of the round), focus on those positions.

I was at dinner in Northern California tonight and the waiter made a point of bringing up @timmcmanus42.bsky.social excellent reporting (my son was wearing an Eagles shirt and the waiter was a birds fan). As I told him: McManus’s reporting is unimpeachable.
Best of luck to Eagles fan / Artemis II Mission Evaluation Room Manager and Orion Systems Engineering & Integration Manager @jthutt.bsky.social. I last saw Jason on Bourbon Street late at night on February 9, 2025. Today is a culmination of decades of hard work - it's so incredibly exciting.
Judging by market prices and availability of substitutes, the AJ Brown trade value is looking pretty good to me. Which makes me revise the likelihood higher than it was a few weeks ago.
The NFL equivalent of “money illusion” is anchoring on nominal dollars in a world where the salary cap has been increasing at 85th percentile rates of change. It compounds quickly - at the post-COVID rate, it doubles every 7.5 years.
I think the world learned today that it's fraudulent for the Santa Clara 49ers, New Jersey Giants, etc., to make false geographic claims. Let's please enforce a modicum of truth in advertising.
They just showed Bayes’s theorem in a Super Bowl advertisement.
Both Howie Roseman (lengthy sample size) and Nick Sirianni (small sample size) have a track record of handling success poorly, yet meeting setbacks with resilience and subsequent glory.
Many great McQuade posts going around, and this is one of them jgoodtimes.substack.com/p/the-relent...

A few months ago I was at a kid’s activity and one mom pointed to my t-shirt and said “tell me about this Jeff Stoutland University”.
Since 1994, the average annual salary cap growth has been 7.0%. Assuming 2026 is in the middle of the quoted range, it would represent 8.7% growth, which is a 75th percentile increase over the past 32 years.
The NFL informed clubs today it is projecting a 2026 salary cap in the range of $301.2 million to $305.7 million per club, per source. That would represent another significant jump from this year’s $279.2 million cap number, and nearly $100M than the $208.2M cap in 2022.
Tom is one of the very few writers where I share the piece before I have read it, because I know it will be good, and that it will be worth our time.
I wrote about Dan open.substack.com/pub/tommcall...
Dan McQuade wrote in a singular, Philadelphia-inflected voice. He brought prolific energy to the beat (posting a dozen times a day at PhilyMag). He had a deep understanding of the Philadelphia sports fan because he was one of us. What a tremendous loss. Gutted for his family, for his 2 year old. 💔
Devastated to be seeing the news about Dan McQuade's passing. He was a great writer and great person, the best and most Philly person I've ever known. I was lucky to have read his work and to have been able to call him a friend. Love you @dhm.bsky.social, what a void you'll leave behind.
2026 kimchi put to bed. Sleep tight, my love. (As always, we follow the great @maangchi.com’s recipe and directions - highly recommend.)
I think the remaining OC candidates with playcalling experience are adversely selected. It is correct to broaden the search to up-and-comers in the NFL or college coaches.
