In response to what they describe as foot-dragging by the administration in contract negotiations, student workers at Columbia University have authorized a strike. We spoke to some of them about their demands.

Hind’s Hall protesters win a legal victory, but the fight continues! A NY State Supreme Court judge vacated Columbia’s “arbitrary and capricious” discipline against 22 student activists accused of occupying Hind’s Hall in 2024, including multi-year suspensions, expulsions, and degree revocations.

BREAKING: Columbia student kidnapped by DHS! Early this morning, DHS agents entered a Columbia Residential building under the guise of searching for a “missing person” and abducted a student without any intervention. This took place just one day after our ICE off Campus rally. 🧵

We’re encouraged by the many Columbia affiliates speaking out in this letter against the University’s repression of Palestinian voices. As we mobilize for a strike, SWC remains committed to the fight for academic freedom for all members of our community. www.columbiaspectator.com/opinion/2026...

This letter was distributed and signed in December 2025. Still, we feel that the issue it discusses remains h...

SWC has opened a Strike Authorization Vote (SAV)! After almost a year of bargaining, it’s clear that Columbia won’t budge on core workplace issues unless we withhold our labor through a strike—we’re ready to ramp up the pressure!🧵

@swcolumbia.bsky.social has just given Columbia our contract proposal on AI- our main demands are that student workers cannot be replaced by AI tools, nor can we be forced to use them in teaching or research (or retaliated against for refusing). Looking forward to their response on Friday 😇

BLEAK. Bleak. I’d been paying attention to Columbia selling out its governance to the Trump admin, not so much its stance on AI. www.columbiaspectator.com/opinion/2026...

Last month, University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin approved a proposal to establish a College of Computing and Artificial Intelligence funded by private corporations and philanthropy.
Mnookin said the move was a response to the inevitable creep of artificial intelligence into all disciplines of academia. Rather than reject AI, she envisioned a university that capitalized on this change by making artificial intelligence a "hub" connecting the humanities to computer science.

Student Workers spotted Public Safety Investigator Donald Gannon watching them swipe into a building where we were holding a weekly meeting. We won’t stand for this kind of intimidation: SWC is mobilizing to protect our community from Public Safety surveillance.

SWC is proud to introduce two UAW-endorsed New York State Assembly candidates: Eli Northrup (distr. 69) and Conrad Blackburn (distr. 70)! At our town hall on Feb. 9, you can meet the candidates, ask questions, and connect with other attendees from the community.

We are also fighting to get ICE out of our workplace as we negotiate a new contract, and Columbia is stonewalling our demands to protect non-citizens. We have had enough of these institutions' feckless complicity.

We reiterate our demand, alongside our siblings in GSU-UE, @nationalnurses.bsky.social, Faculty Forward, and the Lab School Faculty Association, that the University of Chicago act immediately to exclude ICE and CBP from all buildings without a judicial warrant.

After cutting almost every grad teaching job this summer, Columbia has notified department Chairs that one of the last remaining opportunities for PhD candidates to teach their own classes is “on hold” for AY 26-27 and likely to be permanently cut. The new union-busting playbook.

Thank you, The Blue and White, for this insightful piece. Bargaining "has shed light, not only on the lengths Columbia will go to in order to suppress the full breadth of demands from the Union, but also on the particular vulnerability of the student-worker identity."

Last year's arrest of Mahmoud Khalil was more than just a chilling act of political repression, it was an attack on all of our constitutional rights. Now, as the crackdown on pro-Palestinian free speech continues, Mahmoud is being threatened with rearrest. Mahmoud is free—and must remain free.
