A highlight of yesterday's mini railtour was newly-restored ex-Bord na Móna LM384 looking and sounding great on a runpast. Big thanks to our hosts, the Cavan & Leitrim Railway Museum.

Anyway, we go on. A Dublin #painting, "Heuston III" I painted because I love train stations and the areas around them. This was my 3rd time I painted the main station for trains to the west of Ireland with the bridge that shares its name. And a bonus Luas for tram lovers. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Art
Today, 22nd June, marks an important date in the annals of Irish railway preservation & railtours. It was on this date 1986, that Westrail operated the first mainline special to use a preserved diesel locomotive, long before such an operation took place anywhere else in Ireland or, indeed, Britain.
On Saturday, 26th September, Táilte Tours CLG are proud to present The Achill Explorer, a tour of the former Westport to Achill branch line. Using a combination of rail and bus, the tour will be guided by historian Jonathan Beaumont, author of Rails to Achill. www.tailtetours.com/event-detail...

The idea of running special trains for leisure goes back a long time in Ireland. Both the Great Southern Railways and the Great Northern Railway operated "Mystery Train" excursions as far back as the 1930s, with CIÉ reviving them in the 1950s and continuing to operate them well into the 1970s.
