This is very, very obviously the story of these early decades of the 20th century. I used to wonder how to redo my world history courses to account for the last decade of Trump but it’s now so screamingly obvious.

To international historians in the 2050s, the major geopolitical story of our time will be entirely obvious: the oligarchic and institutional self-destruction of the United States and its displacement by China as the global number one.

US per capita income may be high, but its biological living standards are shockingly low. The Chinese live longer, are better fed, and kill themselves at dramatically lower rates. Their kids are now taller than ours; they score higher across the board, including on IQ tests. China’s defense-industrial base now totally dwarfs that of the US. Chinese state capacity is an order of magnitude greater. China’s overtaken the US in top notch scientific publications. China now occupies the dominant position in global manufacturing. It’s share of global mfg value-added is 30 percent to America’s 18 percent. They can outproduce not just the US in weapons, but the entire geopolitical West. With ease.
