I’m on my way to my first #IC2S2! 🌧️ I’ll be supporting presentations about computational narrative analysis by my students and mentees @teagrjohnson.bsky.social and @umagunturi1.bsky.social. If you’re interested in storytelling, pretraining data, social media, or language models, come talk to us!

We are in a crisis for the #EMNLP2026 round of ARR. AC desk rejects and fewer reviews per paper seem necessary to me.
Only 17% of May #ARR authors are qualified for reviewing, and almost 40% of papers have no qualified people?!?!
Attending #ACL? Come join us at NLP4DH 2026 on Saturday from 10am to 5pm! Great selection of papers from across the DH & NLP spectrum this year. Schedule: www.nlp4dh.com/nlp4dh-2026/...

What are people really doing with chatbots? 👀 Turns out that a lot of them are writing/reading various kinds of fiction, and in particular, they're generating a ton of erotica! What does this mean for the future of reading? Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2606.22748 Web Explorer: ai-fiction-wild.com
Excited to share this. @neel2112.bsky.social, @mariaa.bsky.social, and I analyzed 500K anonymous ChatGPT convos (shared w/ consent from WildChat) to see if people were generating fiction. We found tons of stories, fanfiction & erotica. Many users iterated on the same stories for days and weeks.
1/ LLMs learn narrative from their pretraining data but what narrative content is actually in there? It turns out narrative is wildly unevenly distributed across sources and topics. New preprint with @andrewpiper.bsky.social @elliottash.bsky.social @mariaa.bsky.social:
As you may be aware, the Trump administration is planning to dismantle NCAR. I can't say enough about how pivotal NCAR is to worldwide public safety, and also to the mentorship of future scientists. Today is the NSF-imposed deadline for submitting public feedback to congresspeople (see link below).
What should academics be doing right now? I have been writing up some thoughts on what the research says about effective action, and what universities specifically can do. davidbau.github.io/poetsandnurs... It's on GitHub. Suggestions and pull requests welcome. github.com/davidbau/poe...
