historian — Cornell U. professor — book author, “Troop Movements” (2026)

August 2 is the 102nd birth-anniversary of the writer James Baldwin. Baldwin figures in my new book, TROOP MOVEMENTS — as a wartime worker in motion — and as an influence on my analysis. My book traces how ‘Greatest Generation’ WW2 workers came of age — in their paths toward “Sixties” politics…

Also, people "care" about many things. They can only take action on a very few of those and usually the people implying you don't care enough about something know this (based on their own experiences).

Walking around NYC, from Brooklyn to the Village to Harlem — I see glimpses of people and events that I write about. One thing I’m excited about in my new book, TROOP MOVEMENTS (Sep 2026) — is to tell a new story of Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis, from 1940s to 1960s to 2000s, from NYC to Africa and back…

IMO, the Times too often centers some stories around Trump’s putative emotions (he’s “furious”) and frequently frames other articles on the basis of what Trump said (“he describes”). But in this lede Tyler Pager does both.

Trump is furious at Iran for what he describes as their violations of the agreement.
“We make a deal, and everyone’s agreed….”

As an American history professor, I regularly read new books, articles, and dissertations, and also evaluate unpublished manuscripts for journals and book publishers. I would not categorize the recent and emerging historiography in the binary way that Ezra Klein does.

There has been a severing of American history into two visions: one that can only see glory and one that can only see suffering and sin.
