i talk about this a lot re: white southerners (all white americans to a somewhat lesser extent). bigotry is embedded in our basic worldview and requires constant internal confrontation to avoid. as a class we tend to find that highly annoying, preferring reactionary politics. external confrontation.

There’s also something to how women are socialized to be suspicious of flattery — it’s how we transfer responsibility for men’s desire onto women’s bodies; we are taught to defend against that in service to our “innocence” or whatever — whereas men accept flattery as their due. Perfect marks.

Here's the thing. The people who had these massive plantations were not dumb. Thomas Jefferson was not dumb. They modeled themselves after British gentry, complete with elite education for the sons, down to the Southern genteel accent that is a cousin of the English one.
