Librarian who would rather be a theologian

Been exposing myself to Barthian brain worms (reading Church Dogmatcis). I think he is right about the centrality of the proclamation of the Word (at least it is primary for Protestant churches). My long-term worry is what place Protestant churches have in a potentially post-literate society.

Watching the video of El-Sayed explain to Tommy freedom of religion is the number one reason I'm proud to be an American. Freedom of religion is one of our country's greatest contributions and legacies and I cherish it

Revisiting H. Richard Niebuhr's Christ and Culture for an idea kicking around in my brain. He strikes me as an incredibly effective theologian. Clear in his writing and clear about the stakes with some brilliant insights

Fascinated by Calvin reading Jesus' teaching regarding old wineskins as being about the disciples. The disciples were still weak and in need of gentle discipline before the stronger stuff

I read the NYT article about Olah's courting of religious studies scholars to agree that AI models have moral standing and it really is disturbing how much he seems to believe, but then does not advocate for any sort of change in working conditions for the models

My big wish for politics in America is accountability. I want the people driving our horrific immigration policies to be held accountable for violating human rights. I want the most corrupt administration of my lifetime, if not the US' entire history, to be held accountable

I've been meeting with a friend of mine to read through different theological texts. We just now started Elements of Christian Thought by Eugene Rogers. Have been looking forward to this one for a while now

Still seeing people struggling to comprehend Arsenal as a team capable of attacking and not reliant on set pieces. I think we all knew this team was there under the surface last year. Loving it now

Much of my recent life has been reading "canonical" literature and then encouraging friends and coworkers to read it. It feels obvious to see the beauty of works everyone says are worthwhile, but a rewarding experience nonetheless to discover or rediscover these in adulthood

As a fan of the Scream movies, part of me feels that after 3 they probably should have stopped. Sometimes you just need to make a different movie with different characters

"One side encouraged people to put their preferred pronouns in their email signatures. The other has shot innocent people with no criminal records in the head point-blank. I have never felt this politically homeless."

Would recommend Bruce Gordon's biography of Institutes of the Christian Religion. Probably as good an introduction as any for understanding the reception history around Calvin.

"It would take the great German theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834), alongside lesser figures, to recover Reformed Protestantism in the nineteenth century" Bruce Gordon in his bio of Institutes.

"The Institutes is an extended hymn of praise by an exiled Frenchman to a saving God he believed never abandoned the faithful." Bruce Gordon in his biography of Calvin's Institutes

It's John Calvin's birthday! I've amassed several books on Calvin and his work over the years. I think to commemorate the occasion I'm going to pick up this long neglected volume on my shelf
