Large and lanky for a shorebird, with very long legs, a long neck, and a thick-based, slightly upturned bill a lone greater yellowlegs stands in the shallow water. A greater yellowlegs strides purposefully across mudflats and marshes with a distinctive high-stepping gait, occasionally breaking into a run to chase aquatic prey. The Greater Yellowlegs occurs in a wide variety of wetland habitats in migration and winter, from tidal flats to sewage ponds to flooded fields.

Given Vernon had only minimum detection levels of precipitation throughout the entire month of July, it's not surprising that the Okanagan (and Nicola) are experiencing Level 5 drought, the most severe category. The North Okanagan region will be extremely prone to fires for weeks to come. #VernonBC

The monarch butterfly or simply monarch (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae) in the family Nymphalidae. Other common names, depending on region, include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black-veined brown. It is among the most familiar of North American butterflies and an iconic pollinator, although it is not an especially effective pollinator of milkweeds.The eastern North American monarch population is notable for its annual southward late-summer/autumn instinctive migration from the northern and central United States and southern Canada to Florida and Mexico. During the fall migration, monarchs cover thousands of miles, with a corresponding multigenerational return north in spring.

The piping plover (Charadrius melodus) is a small, sand-colored shorebird that nests and feeds along coastal sand and gravel beaches in North America.In 1986, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service listed the Great Lakes population as endangered and the Northern Great Plains and Atlantic populations as threatened. Their breeding habitat includes beaches and sand flats on the Atlantic coast, the shores of the Great Lakes, and in the mid-west of Canada and the United States.After chicks hatch, they are able to walk within hours, and must have access to feeding areas to feed on marine macro invertebrates.

The Least Tern is often seen flying low over the water, with quick deep wingbeats and shrill cries. Usually hovers before plunging into water for tiny prey; does more hovering than most terns. Populations are endangered in many areas because of human impacts on nesting areas, especially competition for use of beaches.

The Red-winged Blackbird seems to sing its nasal songs in every marsh and wet field from coast to coast. They are notably bold, and several will often attack a larger bird, such as a hawk or crow, that flies over their nesting area. The red shoulder patches of the male, hidden under body feathers much of the time, are brilliantly displayed when he is singing. Outside the nesting season, Red-winged Blackbirds sometimes roost in huge concentrations.

A medium-sized, slender songbird with a long, rounded, black tail and a narrow, straight bill. Catbirds are fairly long legged and have broad, rounded wings. Catbirds are secretive but energetic, hopping and fluttering from branch to branch through tangles of vegetation. Singing males sit atop shrubs and small trees. Catbirds are reluctant to fly across open areas, preferring quick, low flights over vegetation.

The common grackle is an icterid bird found in large numbers through much of North America. Adults often have a bluish iridescent appearance on their head, this feature being more pronounced on males. A bright golden eye gives grackles an intent expression.
