This is a long-overdue step forward for women’s safety. But legislation alone is not enough. We must continue to challenge the misogyny that normalises harassment, intimidation, and violence against women and marginalised people. Safety in public spaces should be a basic right for every woman.
For too long, women and girls have been expected to accept catcalling, intimidation, following, sexual comments, and threats in public spaces as part of everyday life. From today, those who intentionally harass someone in public because of their sex can face criminal charges.
