In 2023, concept art was revealed by Super Mario RPG artist Jiro Mifune where the party was inspired by The Three Musketeers, and included Wario. The posts were soon deleted, but I have restored the images to the best of my ability.

In November 2023, Super Mario RPG artist Jiro Mifune shared early concepts where the party was themed after The Three Musketeers. The posts were soon deleted, but were preserved by Super Mario RPG expert pidgezero_one. The photos are taken at oblique angles and have very low contrast. I have enhanced them to the best of my ability. Translations of the original text accompanying the concept art are provided. MARIO The Captain of the Royal Guard of the Mushroom Kingdom. A swordsman with a long and distinguished career. LUIGI Deputy Commander of the Royal Guard of the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario's younger brother. QUEEN PEACH Queen of the Mushroom Kingdom. This time, she is imprisoned in the Slug Kingdom. KINOPI the name is just Kinopio (Japanese for Toad) A rookie soldier in the Royal Guard of the Mushroom Kingdom. The older brother of the kidnapped Toads. WARIO A soldier in the Royal Guard. He was once a leader of a band of thieves, but had a change of heart. Reminder that Onion Knight in Dissidia is not Luneth. Onion's second costume gives him Luneth's face, but the rest of the costume is from the warrior on the cover/logo (who inspired Luneth's appearance/hair). Further, in Japan, the costume is called "ルーネススタイ" or "Luneth-Style".

While the outfit does give Onion Knight Luneth's facial features, the rest of the outfit is based on the figure who appears in Amano's artwork for the Famicom version of Final Fantasy III and outside of being from the same inspiration, has no connection to Luneth.One of several art pieces for the original Final Fantasy III, featuring an unnamed figure who appears in all of Amano's artwork for the game, including the boxart. This figure would inspire the design for Luneth, one of the protagonists of the 3D remake, particularly his ponytail and white hair. The Onion Knight featured in Dissidia Final Fantasy would also take inspiration from the design, such as the swords he wields, the beads in his hair, the outfit, etc. Luneth's connection would be acknowledged in Onion Knight's original alt in Dissidia (which bases Onion Knight's outfit on the figure, but gives him Luneth's eyes and hairstyle) while Duodecim would introduce a second alt more closely based on the figure (albeit with black clothes due to being based on a different image). This outfit would go on to recur for Onion Knight in later appearances.

I was excited for the cameo characters in Final Fantasy Resonance until I realized that there is a non-zero chance that each game is represented by one character and FF3 just has Onion Knight again. I'd be happy to be wrong, but after OO, I refuse to give an inch anymore.

The boss(es) posing as a team is a sign that SH!T JUST GOT REAL. New AU-related commission done by Ingrid/OneGnix on VGen. They do great work, would definitely recommend checking them out.
